Photo copyrights?

I have a few Hubs with photos and/or videos. I've been limited in photo selections because I'm afraid of copyright issues. This has resulted in below average Hubs. I've noticed lots of awesome Hubs with tons of photos and videos. Very few have any photo credits. I would really like to improve my Hubs' photos as well.

Can someone direct me to information on copyright laws regarding photos from other websites? I can't seem to find any clear cut answers.

I've been wondering about this issue also.  I have just been grabbing obvious photos from google image to give my hubs a "face."  Sometimes I will use my own photographs if they are appropriate.  I avoid anything that appears copyrighted but I haven't run into any problems so far, which is to say no one has berated me for using one of their images.  Have I just been lucky?

I use morguefile.com, which has plenty of great, free photos, and you can often find photos on wikimedia commons (commons.wikimedia.org) that are royalty free. The only thing with these two sites is that even though the images are free, there are specific rules for how to credit the photographer. I don't use any of them that often because I take most of my own photos.

    Hope this helps!

I've been building up my own Free Royalty-free Photo Collection that Hubbers (and Lensmasters) can use on their hubs (and lenses).

Feel free to use what you want.

There's a few hundred to start with. I've got 2000+ more to add big_smile

I used Creative Commons licensed photos from Flickr for a lot of my hubs. You can do a search on just cc-licensed photos. Then I put the attribution in the "photo data" section so it should show up beneath the image.

    Great photos Darkside - thanks!

I will try Flickr, it's not something I've paid much attention to yet, thanks embitca.

I've used some of my own photos.  In several places, I've taken photos from other sites which are probably copyrighted.  In some cases I've sent an email to the site owner asking permission.   So far, they've been happy to give permission.

For instance, in my Hub about Living Green, I use a picture from Ecosilk bags (which happen to be my favourite shopping bags).  I generally put the name of the website under the picture - I only wish I knew how to make it a real link!

I must admit there are a few others where I haven't asked permission, or I've sent an email but haven't got a reply.  But I figure if I'm saying something nice about their product or service, they are hardly likely to complain about a free plug!

My hub on  Best Free Stock Photo Sites should help.

It was an answer to a request where someone was also having the same issue.

Thanks, everyone, for so many responses. I've learned about some new photo sites. Darkside, your photos are fantastic. And anyone looking for stock photos should check out kpfangaz's Hub.  It has a lot of great information.
I wasn't clear on my original question. I'm not really speaking of stock photos as much as celebrity photos. Tons of hubs are nothing but celebrity photos. I have some celebrity-related Hubs in which some additional photos would be nice.
I thought that there was some sort of law where thumbnails from other sites are allowed or something like that, but I can't for the life of me find the information now. Does anyone know the rules for linking to photos from other sites or where I can find the info?
