What is your perspective of telling a lie?

Telling a lie is a great sin. But in my own perspective, it is apparently good when someone has to. Perhaps of some reasons. It can be a way to displace oneself from rejection, scorn, or maybe to protect himself from impartial judgement.

I do not lie. thats it. I will not go around screaming..your ugly..jsut because I think it...but if asked something like..do you like this shirt, if I dont, I will find a way to truthfull and tactfully answer the question.
no amount of scorn, or public rejection, will make me lie.
Who needs to be protected from impartial judgement?

telling a lie can be a good thing, like when nazis were running around in the hills of Poland, looking for escaped refugees. then when they asked 'hey, have you seen any escaped refugees?' and they happen to be hiding in your basement but you lie and say 'no, no escapees here'...

        ohhhhhh
        good one
        I stand corrected.
BUT, that is to save someone else from a horrid unreasonable thing. I wouldnt lie to save myself from something I had done..I think there is a difference?

in the words of peter griffin from the show family guy, "now chris, everything i say is a lie.  except that...and that....and that....and that..........(looks around the room briefly)...and that."  sorry, i couldn't resist.

it is never right or justified to lie, imo.
not that i never have or never will again, as it stands i do not have any outstanding lies at the moment and i don't plan on lying in the near future for any reason.

i think it comes down to whether you are an 'ends justify the means' type of person or not.

it may be easier or seem nice and fluffy to tell white lies to protect people, or our own asses, but is it right?

That's not at all what I mean.  It takes a great soul to risk your own soul to protect another.  Lying is never a good thing, but telling the truth has a great price, for yourself and others.

I think the biggest problem most people have is only providing half-truths...where they are conveniently leaving out an important piece of the information either to cover themselves or help ease the pain. I know I’ve found myself doing that...from time to time.

i believe in you wyanjen. it is not always a good reason to protect yourself, but this is what goes on with if not all, most of us. i mean, what can we do if someone has to lie. we do not want to hurt feelings afterall.

Jen, I can't quite agree with that in every case.  Example?  Okay, Hitler gets mentioned a lot in these forums; let's use World War II Germany as an example.  During the Time of Adolf, admitting you were Jewish was tantamount to suicide.  So, let's say a squad of storm troopers ask you on the street, "Are you Jewish?", and--although you definitely are--you say, "No way!  Sig Heil!"

By your standard, the only acceptable course would be to to say, "Yup!  I can trace my family straight back to Judah!"  Then while they're gassing you, you take a nice deep breath of noxious fumes--your last breath, of course--and think happily, "Hey!  I never lied!  I'm good!"

      Sorry.  Can't go that route.

In a regular 10 minute conversation, the average person tells at least 3 white lies.. We're all sinners!

I definitely agree. Nobody in this world can say that he/ she has never lied even at one point in his/ her life.

Some lies can sometimes be useful. However, the more a person lies the bigger risk he/ she has of someday losing someone's trust in a relationship.

      Have a great weekend!

You should never have to tell a lie. When you lie there must be a reason for instance you v'e done something wrong . Even if you think someone may be hurt by the truth it would be easier if you just think of the right words or the right person to do the telling.Lying implies something is wrong or someone has done something wrong. Otherwise there is no reason to lie.

I think lies are sometimes white lies...When senile Aunt Ruth asks if you like her new dress when she does not have a new dress. Why upset her?
Lies to save a life - as Cosette said. I can manage to justify those.
But the lies meant to stall off dealing with the truth are bad. I had a cheating ex who lied to me repeatedly. His excuse -he had to protect me from the truth, when actually he just didn't want to hit the curb. Holly

Lying is inevitable sometimes, in order to protect others from the pain of the truth.  In my case, I have had a better time of things when I have told white lies than when I have been completely truthful, which I always prefer to be.  Whenever I tell the truth, I always pay a great consequence for saying it.

Don't get caught. But if you want a morally accepted answer: keep lies out of important intellectual conversations and literature.

Telling a lie is mouthing, writing, or implying anything dishonest. People respect those who tell the truth, even if they come off as jerks, because they know they can rely on him/her.
I have a friend who tells lies for the sake of nicety. Hedging is rude and should be avoided. Just get to the point.
