   It just broke that $300 million production budget this weekend.  Box Office estimates, as of Friday, have its total domestic gross at $309 million.  Worldwide, its made $785 million. 
   
   A little over 2 weeks in wide release and its the second highest grossing film of the year in the U.S. (Transformers is #1).  Bravo, James Cameron.

      I was pretty sure I saw a list of the top grossing films of 2009, and Avatar was #7...not that that's anything to be embarrassed about...breaking into the top 10 in 2 weeks time is an incredible thing, but I thought Harry Potter was #2

            but as of WHEN? that's the important question...
            did Avatar outearn the other movies that were in the top 10 by December 31, 2009?? or did this most recent weekend bring in that money??
            because, if we're talking about top-grossing films of 2009, then we can only look at the money earned in 2009...if we're talking about top-grossing films RELEASED in 2009, then that's a different discussion and Avatar is easily #2...

               If we're talking numbers on the final weekend of December, you could be right.  But in terms of the gross revenue up until December 31st, I think Avatar had already clutched the number 2 spot.  Can't say for sure, though.

                  it IS all semantics in the end...the movie is making a buttload of money just like everyone involved had wanted it too and from their perspective, that's all that really matters

   Wow.  I looked this up the other day and saw estimates that Avatar cost over 300 million to make.  The 200 million post production is the first figure I've seen, but if it pulled in 785 million already, then it's going to be a huge money maker.  This movie has to be a good mine for merchandise as well. 
   
   I wonder what the total revenue estimates for Avatar are now.  Will it be the highest grossing or most profitable movie of all time?

   Maybe they could have saved a few bucks by making it a bit shorter. I heard it was a very loooonnnnngggg movie. I was impressed by the graphic artistry I have seen on the previews. Can't wait to see it for reals.

      It doesn't seem like a long movie at all. I saw it twice within the space of a week.
      It does have a couple of "dead" spots, but otherwise, fantastic.
      3D, of course.

   It just broke $1 billion in the box office world wide.  Fastest movie ever to do so (though one should consider inflation in ticket prices -  I read somewhere that the movie probably sold about half the tickets Titanic did when it broke $1 billion, so attendance wise its not yet comparable). 
   
   It now has the 4th highest worldwide gross of all time, and is sure to climb higher.  At this rate, it will reach number 1 in no time.
   
   The movies that hold the current highest records?
   3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1.06 billion
   2. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King $1.1 billion
   1. Titanic $1.8 billion

      When my wife talked me into going I thought I would hate it but to my surprise I agree with you and think it is the best movie I have ever watched.
