Angela Harris' question got me thinking about all the arguments I've had about this: If you could choose a superpower, would you breathe underwater and discover the world of the deep, or would you fly and explore the heavens? Everyone I've met has a definitive answer!
(I would TOTALLY breathe underwater)
They're both equal.
haha just kidding I have a definitive answer- F L Y I N G! That is 1000 times better than breathing underwater. Besides, if you could fly really fast like superman, who's to say that you could just hold your breath and quickly "fly" underwater like 500 feet and then come back up for air?
While this is definitely true, in your five hundred meter speed dive you would A) have an awful lot of water going straight up your nose and B) definitely not have time to look around!! You cannot explore the bottom of Loch Ness (which is 26 MILES long, by the way, five hundred feet would soo not cover it) in an underwater dash.
Chill out in the titanic....race a shark....revel in the fact that he can't swim backwards and you totally can.....go play with penguins....sounds like fun to me!
I've thought about the super power thing before, it's fun. If I had to pick between flight and under water breathing, I'd take flight.
However, for me the real toss up has always between invulnerability and phase-shifting. You look at super heros like the Thing and the Hulk and, my favorite, the Tick and you can see how being just unkillable would be a blast. You could do whatever you wanted, save anyone from anything whenever. That would be cool. Phase-shift would be equally cool, you could know anything, go anywhere by going invisible (you could fly for free because you just walk onto planes and stuff, and you could do the same into submarines, so in effect, you could fly and breathe under water) and u can walk thru stuff. I guess that's kinda like the best of both worlds from that other thread.
I would say flying. Although it would be awesome to explore places that nobody has been to under the ocean but at least you wouldn't have to take a boat anywhere. I tend to get sea sick on a cruise. flying you could go to cloud nine, and view almost anyplace you want to!
Ah! I can't believe it--can i get no support with swimming underwater? Think of it! Caves, prehistoric creatures, underwater volcanoes, ocean rifts, discovering hidden tropical island where villains are building missile silos, riding with dolphins, whales, EVERYTHING!!
I'm feeling totally outnumbered. :-(
Aw I'm sorry AC. I just think I would enjoy flying a lot more. But it would be awesome to discover all that and see all the sunken ships and treasure. But imagine all the place you could go if you just flap your arms and sail there. I always wanted to look down from the Eiffel Tower in Paris or off a pyramid in Egypt or even Mount Rushmore. You could go any place you wanted and see any place you wanted!
definitely flying - no cape, no wings, no surf board; just be able to fly at super sonic speeds from a dead start like Hancock (but without the drinking and womanizing ).
Yeah that would suck if you had wings or a cape. LAME. Aww now I feel more bad for AC. She is really outnumbered now.
Flying. But with the drinking and womanizing
If the globe warms enough to melt all the earth's ice, the underwater thing might be the way to go. If you are going to just fly over water-- what's the point. On the other hand, who wants to be eaten by a shark?
Sorry to add to outnumbering the underwater super power, but as much as I love water, I would love to be able to fly. Yes!
Flying=Nose Bleed
Breathing Under Water=Lots of pressure if you go to deep
What I would choose=Flying-no gills involved
The only reason why I would say breathing under water is to discover stuff that nobody has seen before but you are right you could die from all the pressure on you. If you can't go deep, How are you supposed to discover stuff? I can handle a nose bleed.
It has to be flying for me. I could then fly up high and poop on all the people that annoy me! LOL
Flying=freedom for me. And the view would be a bonus. It has to be flying!
Despite all the good fun and sky-high pooping and such, I am shocked that I'm not getting more support here! I mean, yes, Waterworld should have been a tip off to me that maybe people were not ready for the whole, yay water bit, but lets just make a pop culture round up of things that agree with ME.
1. Pirates of the Caribbean. Jack Sparrow REALLY likes the ocean. I'm sure he'd hop on board with me.
2. Aquaman. Hello, real superhero with TOTALLY HEROIC ability to swim underwater.
3. Penguins. Everyone liked that marching movie. And they're the birds of the ocean. Evolutionarily speaking, they decided it would better suit their chances of survival to swim as opposed to fly. Can't argue with the penguins.
4. Little Mermaid. She may want to be part of our world and all that crap, but all she actually wanted to do was hook up and lie on the beach--an early precursor to the real housewives of orange county.
Do I have anyone convinced yet?
And, just to help you water breathers out, seems like sharks are on their way to extinction pretty soon anyway, so, with global warming to make us an all water planet and shark powders being used to make magic at an alarming rate, water breathing may be the way to go.
I'm with Mark on the drinking and womanizing tho.
Flying definitely beats out breathing underwater. That is why characters like Superman and even lame ones like Hawkman (who can do nothing but flying and hitting people with a hard object) are far cooler than Aquaman or Tempest.
I remember the old JLA comicbook from the Mid-90ies. The first thing the writer did in every stroy-arc was get rid of Aquaman or at least keep him busy so that he is out of the way. Then the story/threat would progress. I read somewhere that this is what was done on "Superfriends" as well, though I don't recall seeing a single episode.
Since it would be easier to breath underwater with the aid of gear than to fly with any kind of personal apparatus, I would have to choose flying as my super power.
I'd have to say that I'm with the "flying" people, haha. I love to fly, and the ability to do it without being strapped into something flimsy like a C-152 (aka a beercan with wings) would be awesome.

Have you ever dreamed about flying/floating?I have dreamed this one dream over and over again my whole life about me being able to just close my eyes, think hard, and just take a jump and start flying. I cannot go too high, but I make sure to always surround myself with friends and family so they...

I can't and I don't think anyone else can, yet many believe they can. Why is it that they believe they can fly, when it's quite impossible? In other words, many claim things that violate the physical laws of the universe, like defying gravity and flying. No one has actually claimed they can fly, but...
