After you left Catholicism behind, did you join another religious group?

Did you become an agnostic? An atheist? Just decided to pick-n-choose your own combination of beliefs? Something else?

I'm curious to see if there's a pattern formed by recovering Catholics.

I went from Catholicism to my own Christian beliefs, then finally settled on pantheism.

    Dominus vobiscum.

    (I liked the Latin mass!)

I see. But I'm having a tiny bit of trouble understanding you.

Are you saying you were Catholic at one time then started preaching your own religion after you left Catholicism?

        Am I close?

I sort of discovered the teaching of the ascended masters after I baptized my daughter in the church, and they really resonated with me. I was taught as a Catholic about Jesus and Mother Mary but I always knew it was incomplete and incorrect at best. I love the teachings of oneness and that is the only thing I truly feel is what is the basis behind all religions. The Catholic religion is based on patriarchal, unbalanced control that suppresses the divine feminine and that is why if they don't change they will crumble. It is happening because people are waking up! Namaste!

Well now, the Catholic Church in ireland has very little to celebrate at the moment....scandal after scandal...Bishops now resigning etc etc I was reared as a Catholic, what ever that is, however, at 16 years old I left home and the institution of Catholicism behind me, I do belief in God, but I do not need a priest to mediate for me, I can talk for myslef, why do I belief in God, well because I have meet Satin in my lifes journey, and so if Satin exists God must exist, and I guess I have also so meet God along the way....Jesus Christ is not an institution wether it be protestant, catholic, hindu, muslim or any other.....

I started objecting to RC dogma while still at convent school when the nuns and priests did not give me satisfactory answers to various questions.

On going to university, I did participate in the Catholic Chaplaincy, because it was a very exciting place. The chaplains there were very radical, both politically and theologically.

At that time, and some years later, I briefly explored evangelical Christianity. I suppose I was hoping to find certainty and assurance. However, I could not cope with the intellectual compromises demanded of me.

All through this time, since childhood, I was fascinated by the writings of mystics of all religions, and also read a lot about Buddhism and Hinduism. I also read widely on mythology. All this eventually led me to the Western mysteries. I joined one organisation teaching these matters, moved to and through a second one and am now in a third one. Through this, I have discovered my personal spiritual path, which makes sense to me and ultimately that is all that is important.

    Calling all ex-Catholics?

Yeah, What can I do for you. And, no I am not a recovering Catholic. I lived the beginning of my life emerge in Catholic religion until I was 17 years old.

For the next 5 years I searched for answers. At 22 years of age, I dove into testing Catholic doctrines in my life. Which, led me to a simple self-realization that the Catholic religion is just a system of control, greed and the positions religious/spiritual leaders of all religion, are only in their positions, because they themselves perpetuate the hoax of the "GOD" concept.

When I lived through applying doctrines to one's life and testing the validity, one learns how false the doctrines are really and unattainable by any human, because the goal is perfection, for which human beings cannot obtain.

We make mistakes and to believe that we can obtain perfection, when we make more mistakes than have right answers, shows a direct contradiction to life.

Hence, religion is and was dismissed as a hoax. Thus, when religion is understood to be nothing but control, then it gives more understanding to the "GOD" concept and it's failed guidance for humankind.

I am now of the understanding that people are simply too busy with their life, that they choose to live selfishly and not of self-interest.

That's the way it's come to me through my learned experience. smile

    1. Sara Tonyn profile image59
Sara Tonynposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Holy crap! You've been busy! big_smile

So you're an atheist now, correct?

      1. Cagsil profile image71
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

No. I reject all religions that are based on mystical "GOD" concept.

Religion should be non-existent, as the "GOD" concept goes away with it.

If people use the code of ethics offered by the contradiction offered by religion, one then deems them a servant to someone else's agenda other than their own, makes absolutely no sense.

Simply because of what is offered by religion isn't real and it's goals are not as they appear. The doctrines are unattainable. That means, cannot achieve them. Then, what is the real purpose of religion? CONTROL!

As long as people were to understand the highest cause on Earth is the human race and it's survival. Understanding that, then a true morality could be taught among the children and passed on thru generation. Thus, changing society to the better over a period of time.

The damage done to society from religion's control of people, has become a detriment to the rest of society. This has become even more obvious than ever before.

        Just another thought. smile

        1. Sara Tonyn profile image59
Sara Tonynposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Many religions are based on guilt and fear, two of the strongest and most potentially crippling emotions human beings have. It's easy to see why people are attracted to things that promise them forgiveness and protection.

So you're not an atheist; would you describe yourself as an agnostic? Or a "nothing"? (Sorry, that sounds really bad. lol)

Or do you have your own description of a non-atheist?

          1. Cagsil profile image71
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yeah, most people are courageless and refuse to accept responsibility for their own life. They want to make sure that any of their mistakes can be wiped clean? somehow. It's pathetic to think that their own actions that hurt someone else, is wiped clean, just because they repent. It's their own form of B.S. so they can absolve themselves.

I don't subscribe to any religion, whatsoever. So, I guess I don't get a label, except for non-believer. smile

I am an 'ex-Catholic.' Actually, though I was raised as one, I never really was too interested.

It just never worked for me. From 15 on I had a very hard and stressful time in Catholic highschool handling the concept of God and Catholicism...it actually gave me a bit of conflict and anxiety. I think at 18 I accepted that Christianity in general wasn't for me, and at 21, though interesting, religions were not my thang.

I am an atheist however. Not a staunch one. I don't agree with divinities as I feel the universe is far more intricate than that...and I don't understand it but I am content living in it and enjoying life now. :]

I grew up Catholic as was told to fear God.  I never liked it.  By an early age, everything but the sermon was memorization, I can still repeat those prayers by heart today.  I chose to leave because it didn't fit within my thinking.  My parents died before I was 20, so I didn't feel any guilt about leaving the church.  I found my own way.

    1. Sara Tonyn profile image59
Sara Tonynposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yup. And that sums up why I have a problem with many religions. The Fear Factor seems like a ridiculous reason to worship something.

Me too! The prayers & the hymns; I'll never forget 'em, barring Alzheimer's.

Sorry to hear about you losing your parents when you were so young. I know what that's like -- and it sure doesn't make it easy to worship something that could have spared them but didn't...

More on those prayers we had to memorize...

    Remember the Act of Contrition?

"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee..."

Well, I wasn't a particularly bright child. The word "heartily" didn't make sense to me. So instead I thought the prayer went...

"O my God, I am hardly sorry for having offended Thee..."

Eventually I realized that made even less sense so I said this instead...

"O my God, I am partly sorry for having offended Thee..."

Obviously I wasn't meant to be a Catholic.
