Is working at home really green?

   Everyone reading this is using a computer made of plastic and use other petrol chemicals in their manufacture. How much toxic waste is created making all these computers, their accessories, and support. And how many millions of extra kilowatts of power have to be produced to power home computers and all it takes to support them. How many trees have to die for the pulp mills to make the reams paper that go through all of the home printers? How many acres are polluted growing Roundup Ready soy to make the ink that is used in all those home printers. Acres that should be used to raise food.
   I think any one who believes they are saving the planet by working at home are fooling them selves. There a lot of other reasons to work at home that more sense.

      Each point you make is true. However, manufacturers are now required to accept old computers for recycling. As for energy, I buy 100% renewable (solar or wind). I print rarely, and when I do, it's usually on paper I make myself, from recycled paper, fallen leaves, etc.
      
      Yes, everything we do has an impact on the planet. There's no avoiding that. I applaud you for bringing that to our attention. I think many people are struggling to find green solutions and we all have something to learn.

   I have some green blinky lights and a sorta-green colored desktop.. Does that count?
   
   Oh, and I'm green with envy for my neighbors computer.. the bums.
   
   ...really, there's a point where this whole "living green" stuff can be taken a little too far.

      That is exactly my point. You can be a good steward of your resources without turning it into a religious event.

   just done a hub about one of Americas first real business women....Ether Howland..... what an inspiration and that was in the 19th Century..... green, is what you want it to be

   What doe the envoronmental impact of computers have to do with working at home? You'd still be using a computer if you were in an office. The only difference is that you don't have to travel to work in a car, but if you cycle, walk or even catch public transport to work then there isn't any difference.
