It doesn't really matter who's created more jobs.

The government isn't supposed to be in the business of job-creation. Didn't we learn anything from Communism (having production decided by government is not efficient)? Didn't we learn anything from the 'Human Action' by Mises (the government makes decisions politically, not economically)? Didn't we learn anything from Obama's recent 'job creation' (the cost of each job was about $300,000, and Obama took credit for creating jobs that didn't exist)?

If you want to create jobs, lower taxes, reduce government spending, and reduce restrictions on entering the economy.

    The quote in context:

She joked that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has created more jobs than Mr. Obama. "She's created at least 11 jobs fact-checking at the AP just for the Palin autobiography," she said.

    It was just a joke.

The mayor of Los Angeles recently touted his "job creation"....30 new jobs... He paid enough money to a small firm from the City of Commerce (you would never be able to tell the dividing line between L.A. and the C.O.C.)..to move within Los Angeles proper....this is creation....

I'm tired of politics as usual and of smiling-faced clowns in expensive suits who are turning this city, state, and nation into a joke....

Mayor V. won't suffer, though...at least not financially...the next round of layoffs to City workers...teachers, health care, police officers and firefighters is coming....they call this the "Fragmented Metropolis" for a reason....and it is falling apart..

The betterment of the entire country, not just for large corporations, is the primary task of our government. That job includes the economy where job creation and maintaining a stable system of labor and finance are primary.

So, yes. It is part of the government's job to create jobs or to create an economic environment where jobs evolve and grow. So far, the US government has HINDERED job growth in the US by allowing corporations to leave US borders and making it possible for foreign workers to take jobs from Americans.

I am not a xenophobe or an isolationist. Far from it. I would prefer, however, some parity in labor exchange and commerce. If American companies needed to import labor, as they did in the 1800s, there would be no issue. But, with higher and higher unemployment, now would be a good time to turn the clock back on some of our labor and immigration policies. If things improve later on, open the gates back up.

Remember all that pro-immigration labor talk about all those jobs that Americans wouldn't do? Well, right about now, I know many Americans who would happily do those jobs to get some bills paid.

"So, yes. It is part of the government's job to create jobs"

      I could not disagree more.

      Which policies would those be?

Immigration: How about a 10 year moratorium?

Labor: An end to Visas for guest workers and forcing companies that outsource to pay into worker's compensation, Social Security, and unemployment as if they had hired Americans.

None of that would address the problems you seem concerned about, and would most likely hurt our economy further.

The number of people who immigrate here legally each year does not have any significant impact on unemployment. However, those Americans most likely to be unemployed - those with the most basic skills - are the ones who could be doing jobs that are currently done by illegal aliens under the table. Your impractical, unamerican notion of stopping all immigration would not stop illegal immigration. You would punish those who come here legally, respect our laws, and generally contribute to our society and economy because you are upset about what those who come here illegally, distort labor markets, fall prey to exploitive employers, and often drain services they do not pay for. Doesn't make sense.

A record 1,046,539 persons were naturalized as U.S. citizens in 2008.  Unless none of them planned on working when they arrived, your claim that their entry had no net effect on employment makes no sense. That's just 2008. Think about what a decade brings.

Remind me again why a country with 300,000,000 people, high unemployment, environmental issues, and soaring national debt needs MORE people? It would be like having an indebted and starving family of 12 think it can adopt 3 more kids and manage.

You conflate legal and illegal immigration.

"You conflate legal and illegal immigration"

No, that is what YOU are doing. Legal immigrants bring skills and education that strengthen the nation and/or support the family structure of citizens and legal residents in ways that have a positive effect on our country.

Illegal immigrants bring with them, or fall prey to, negatives that weaken the nation in many ways.

Being anti-immigration in general is unamerican. You should be focusing your energy on the problem of illegal immigration - the problem that your impractical suggestion would address not at all.

UmAmerican? Really? Jingoism the best you can do? We have had moratoriums in the past and it didn't bring the nation to a screeching economic or moral halt.

                    re: Legal immigrants bring.........???

Your statement suggests that America doesn't already have enough educated people or values to fill our needs.

The real answer is "So what?" The issue isn't whether they arrive educated or what sort of values they do or do not bring with them. The issue is about NUMBERS. Flooding the market with job seekers hurts those already seeking employment and drives wages down.

I wish those living in foreign lands all the blessing and happiness that I wish for myself, BUT they might need to wait until we get our own house in order before they move on in.

"Immigration: How about a 10 year moratorium?"

That would be impractical and unamerican.

"Labor: An end to Visas for guest workers and forcing companies that outsource to pay into worker's compensation, Social Security, and unemployment as if they had hired Americans."

That would be a great way to weaken our economy even more.

Don't forget the job opening she created when she quit her's. That was indeed very noble of her.

Ann Coulter's right.  And unlike the Great Obama, it didn't cost the taxpayer $150,000 to create each job. lol
