people collect things because they feel good about it. it gives them the best sense of ownership and control on what they own.

Many people collect things for fun, such as stamps,model trains, beer cans, and the list goes on and on.
Sometimes people collect things because they aren't able to let go.
I don't think there's one right answer. People collect things for all sorts of reasons sometimes its for fun or pleasure, and sometimes unfortunately there is pain involved.
Sentimental value. If something invokes a cherished memory or feeling, people are likely to want to hold on to those things.
Some for enjoyment, time diversion and more recently some collect looking at it as a possible investment. Think of all the stuff you use to have that years later you heard sold for lots of money.
For various reasons. I collected things such as comics and comic cards with the hope that they would one day be worth a descent amount of money.
