Do you think Warcraft 4 will ever get made thanks to WoW?

World of Warcraft has redefined the gaming industry.  However, it has also put a long anticipated release in Warcraft 4 on the shelf for years.  Is there any hope for strategy gamers to see this lost treasure?

I think there is a chance that we will still see it. But it probably won't be for a long while (possibly as far out as wow shutting down). There is also a chance that it will take place in the distant future, or past, of the warcraft universe to avoid conflicting with the mammoth storylines in wow.

Yeah, which is really unfortunate because there are some old diehard (like me) who never got into WoW who would like to see those storylines re-done in the classic fashion.

I never really liked WoW, but Warcraft looks appealing. I'm more of a Civilization gamer.

I like Civ, but it's a little too laid back for me.  I'm a pure army vs. army guy with the resource collecting mixed in.

I didn't think they'd ever get around to making Diablo III, but they did. I expect there's still hope!

Most, if not all of the original Warcraft team have left to do things like Starcraft or simply other games in general. You can clearly see this by some of the design choices and their implementation in WoW, thus if a WC4 was to be released, it would be considerably different to the original games.

The MMO market is considerably different to the RTS market, and it was far easier to put Warcraft 3 (a shadow of what we have in terms of universe) into WoW, a fully blown Azeroth made for exploring. To only put a pinch of that in the next RTS, which can't easily be expanded upon save for modding, would upset the players. The Pandaren race was heavily requested, but the fact that there were no Xerothian demons or Scourge ticked a lot of players off even to this day. What themes are covered and how the story develops in conjunction to the already healthy WoW remains to be known.

Starcraft 2 still has one more expansion, allowing players to take the Protoss through their own campaign. With Heart of the Swarm being successful to no end, I've a feeling these guys might be willing to give Warcraft 4 a go and turn what could've been a flop into a phenomenon.

That is my hope.  Starcraft 2 has done a masterful job of reinventing the original series.  I figure maybe they make a switch. Turn Starcraft into the MMO and shift Warcraft back to RTS.
