Puff, puff - breathing deeply and deliberately. We didn't have Lamaze methods - or any of the others you're covering - back when I was having babies, but instinctively, I knew to breathe deeply, relax, meditate on lovely scenarios during labor. How to have the baby itself, though - was not a decision we were allowed to choose. They knocked one out with a "spinal" which required a 24-hour recovery lying flat on one's back! I'd have much preferred a few moments of pain and pushing - and consciousness to that, frankly. I've never preferred being unconscious anyway. I want to be aware! So I applaud the methods now which enable a woman to be "present" at the birth of her babies!

      Great work, as always, maita!!

I read some years ago that women lay on their backs to give birth in the hospital because it is convenient for the doctor - there is no gravity at work here. Then doctors have mistakenly used forceps to drag the baby out. What a horror to mothers and babies.

The time to learn about natural child birth and breastfeeding is long overdue. I thank you for your many hubs about pregnancy - there is so much we have to unlearn and then learn.

      Your BIG fan from NYC!
