   As someone who has had his home robbed when not home let me tell you that there is no replacement for certain pets. Watch dogs, not guard dogs, because watch dogs know to make noise whenever they sense intruders. While you may think a lab would be good even better is a big mouthed Cairn terrier. They have radar ears! Secret pet tip; Parrots have awesome hearing abilities and often make noises when they hear things outside at night! At least mine does, anyway. Out of nowhere he will make a noise like a smoochy noise or a short whistle. Its late and his cage is covered, yet still he is responding to a sound from outside.
   Then you get you're weapon of choice, we all have one, be it a baseball bat, sword(My favorite), Nunchuks or even a gun and deal with the intruder like any honest American should. If you are able to handle yourself, that is, if not you then have to wait until the threat reveals itself before you call the cops and pray they get there in time. Not my option but there you have it.

   If you don't have a dog, get a dog! One that is medium or large in size and a protective breed, such as a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Akita, Great Dane, Colly, ect. Avoid breeds that are typically quiet, like a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute.
   
   If a dog is not an option, leave some lights on at night. This will make the robber think you are awake and most likely not stop in. Keep a metal bat by each door and next to your bed. You can also keep bells by doors and windows to alert you. Keep a phone near where you sleep at night as well.
   
   There are also security systems. These are a lot more affordable then they use to be.

   Years ago, someone broke into my home in broad daylight while I was at work. I actually had to move to get past this as the neighborhood was definitely not my first choice to begin with. However, there are people who can get past this by getting security systems, stronger doors and windows, better lighting, guns, or taking self defense classes. Some people like dogs and others don't, however crooks could bring treats or simply kill them if they wanted in badly enough.
   
   I was told by officers that I should get a dog after my break in but have also been told by one dog owner and two others that crooks will bring treats or meat for any dogs on the property.
   
   Unfortunately there are a lot of people who refuse to go anywhere at night and make sure they are indoors at dusk as if they must protect their home as opposed to it being the other way around. I couldn't live like that.
