The best natural remedy is to avoid processed foods and eat natural foods. Natural foods provide your body with optimal nutrition whereas processed foods are empty calories that don't provide any or very little nutrition. In addition, taking a quality multi-vitamin and fish oil are your body's insurance policy. Fish oil, or any Omega-3 fatty acids, will help alleviate inflammation which is what causes swollen ankles and water retention. Also, drink lots of water to flush the toxins out of the body.

Elevating your feet above the heart will help. Cut back on salt, makes us retain water. Two natural diuretics are celery, and B6. Celery, up to 4 stalks a day, may be eaten or taken in supplement form. B6 may be taken up to 3 times a day.
Sitting for long periods of time can be a contributing factor. get up and walk around to get the circulation going. If this becomes an ongoing problem it may be a sign of some other underlying illness. Such as high blood pressure, and diabetes. Best to consult a physician. I hope this helps.

The first thing you need to determine is if its simply water retention or if there is an underlying cause. have you seen a healthcare professional? There are many other issues, (kidney, liver, cardiovascular, arthritis, your monthly menstrual cycle (you being a woman) even high blood pressure will affect your body's retention of water. Until you know why your retaining water, whether its something as simple as too much sodium intake or excessively hot weather, or its being perpetuated by another affliction, that is a difficult question to answer.

My husband has battled this problem for years and I have kept notes on what works to rid edema (water retention).  Elevate swollen legs and feet high above the waist so the kidneys can work more effectively. Drink plenty of water.  Check out my hub page: http://diana-lee.hubpages.com/hub/EDEMA … -NATURALLY

I think it depends if this is an acute or chronic condition. If it is acute then you may want to try drinking hops or chicory tea, or eating roasted pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin tea may also be made from the seeds.
For a chronic condition it is always best to have a doctor evaluate the underlying problem before seeking any therapy. I wish you luck!

    Hello Pamela-anne,
You could try the aromatherapy foot bath route.  I was an aromatherapist for many years and many people found this to be a great help.  You would have to invest in some essential oils though. Don't use hot water - but warm enough to be comforting - 2 drops of fennel, 1 drop of geranium and 1 drop of lavender in a bowl big enough to put at least 1 foot in,  then the other! Half fill the bowl. Fennel is a well known excretory, excellent for fluid retention as is geranium which is well known as a balancing oil. Lavender is a cure all and yes, also an excretory. It really does help. God Bless.
