When you feel extremely overwhelmed (be it work, family etc), what do you do to feel better?
Sometimes I feel so frustrated with life that I can't do anything..I cant sit still, no appetite etc.. So what do you do when you are experiencing such feelings to feel better?
Eat ice cream. It used to be Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip but that got so grossly overused while I was caring for my sister that I never wanted to see a box of it again. Now it's Haagen Dazs Vanilla Bean but I only buy the smallest container and only have a spoon or two at a time. It's amazing how differently you view frustration, depression, and overwhelming emotion after you've lived through a life changing event with someone you love.
I do that too. I am a fan of rocky road, strawberry, and I like coffee too. I think I will get some shopping tomorrow. :-) Thanks for the idea . . .
You just reminded me of Hagen Daz Rum Raisin -- haven't had that in years. .....Must not have felt bad enough for quite awhile.
Just reminded me I still have some chocolate coated vanilla ice cream stick in my freezer.. Good quick fix..hah
You have to find something to do that you truly enjoy doing. What are your interests? Music? Art? Movies? Food? Great coffee?
Find something that "takes you away" like the old Calgon commercials. Maybe it's exercise, a walk in the park, a bubble bath, whatever.
Make time daily to participate in the thing you do just for you. Don't let anyone intrude on your "me" time. Shut the world OUT!
Talk to yourself about how you are feeling. Or talk to a professional. But get these feelings out into the open. Keeping them to yourself is only making YOU sick.
I once had anger issues. Now, when I am mad, I take my gun and go out to the gun range and shoot the hell out of some targets. Or you can take a hammer and go beat the crap out of some inanimate object like a piece of wood. Just get these feelings OUT of YOU in a non-destructive way.
At night before you go to sleep, tell yourself, "today has been a good day".
Thanks for the advice..I also agree motivating yourself with positive statements or thoughts help..what I try to do every morning before I get out of bed is to tell myself the day is going to be great - helps to set positive tone to start the day..
Give myself to say no to requests to volunteer, more requests for work/overtime.
People will ask or demand until they are told NO. And it isn't wrong to say no, while others will take advantage of you until you can't or won't let them anymore.
Yes..agree we should learn to not feel bad to say no..thanks for your comment!
I question myself; reflect. There is always a reason. Is it work; health?
I do only so many hours and have changed settings. I look at my health, change some things in the diet and take supplements post seeing a Kinesiologist. Find a great one on line who will not charge a bomb. Look for kindness. There are a few.
In your case, check your blood profile to include thyroids. watch your food carefully. Restlessness can mean an overactive mind and much stress. Try exercise but only if there is no weakness. Use music and read motivational books. Stephen Covey and Wayne Dyer are two of the Americans that I'll recommend.
Life is actually quite beautiful, and the Universe is friendly. I say this in a nice way, but take responsibility. Believe that no one else can help you but yourself, but utilise a team spirit initially for support. The internet is full of soothing music and videos of great motivators. Join a relaxation or meditation group. Life is truly precious. Never give up! Much Love
A very good point. A medical evaluation is always a good idea of these feeling are taking over.
Yes..good to find the root cause to why we may feel overwhelmed at times..and life does have its beautiful moments as well so we should not forget that..thanks!
Trigger Warning: I use a box cutter and make myself bleed.
Yes..try something less harmful.. Don't scar yourself..
To quell overwhelm, engage in an activity that you enjoy, such as listening to music, reading a book or taking a walk, and consider how you can solve the stressors that triggered your overwhelm in the first place.
I stop.
I close my eyes.
I breath deeper
I clear my head
I think positive thoughts
then I continue.

Do your family ever make you feel guilty about the life path you chose? In 2007, at the age of 31, I left my home in England and moved to Texas, USA, and got married. Since that day, my parents and one sibling have subtly made me feel tremendous guilt for 'leaving' them, and will often ask why...
