Why do people worry?

Worrying can harm your health, but  is there really any benefit from it?  If no benefit, why do it?

I believe there is a benefit as long as it doesn't become overwhelming.

I worry because of the possibility that something bad might happen. So I take steps to avoid that possibility.

+1  Worry is necessary and is good for us...if kept to a minimum, in small amounts.  It is what allows and encourages us to prepare for the future, to think twice before doing stupid things (driving drunk, maybe) and to put forth the effort to improve (without education I'll probably dig ditches for life).

Only when we allow it to overwhelm us, particularly over things we cannot affect, is it a negative force in our lives.
