Why are the Chinese people short in length in average?
Adult height between ethnic groups often differs significantly. Environmental factors are events that occur before adult height is reached, such as diet, exercise, disease and living conditions.
There are many different ways of looking at it though, and the genetics/evolution route is still a factor.
One of the main theories of evolution is the separation of different species to different areas like Africa, Europe, and Asia. They certain species that migrated towards Asia could have been inherently shorter then the European one for an example.
Nutrition. The average South Korean is 6 inches taller than the average North Korean! They share the same genes, but South Korea has a stronger economy so the people eat better.
As China gets stronger, their average height will also increase. Anyway, Chinese people really aren't that short. Just look at Yao Ming and his wife.
In developed cities like Beijing and Shanghai, the average height is comparable to Western countries. It's the rural areas that bring down the national average because they are poor.
