Fibromyalgia is not a disease , it is a complex syndrome characterized by muscle pain, fatigue, numbness, rigidity of joints, sleep disturbances etc. It can vary from person to person. Stress, anxiety can be a serious factor which can trigger fibromyalgia and in those peoples the symptoms can include bowel disturbances, difficulty in swallowing etc, apart from other symptoms.
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized mostly by pain in fibrous tissues, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, forgetfullness and joint stiffness among a host of other things. Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion. For someone to be diagnosed with FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) they have to have pain in 11 out of 18 pressure points on their body, but that is just the beginning. The patient then undergoes a series of blood tests and MRI scans. Finally a qualified doctor who is familiar with the syndrome may diagnose it or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is a syndrome that is very similar to FMS.
