It comes down to seeing someone in need and doing something about it. I remember this lady asked me if I had a few dollars so she could get something to eat and 9 out of 10 times, I'd say no, but I gave it to her because I felt like she needed it. I don't think of it as helping the poor, but more as helping someone in need, like stopping to help someone with a dead car battery.

There's no single best way, I think it's a matter of having compassion.

    giving them food,
i once bought a hotdog for a stranger,
and his face lit up, he smiled
    it was the cutest thing
& talking to them, they're just like anyone else.

Any way we can. Unfortunately those on the street corners you can never tell if their "signs" are true or if they will use whatever money you give them to buy drugs, cigarettes or alcohol, yet I still feel compelled to give to them. You could definitely give them food instead of money but I've only ever given cash.

We used to put together brown paper bags of food that could be eaten without the need of any preparation and that wouldn't go bad. We would buy most the stuff at a wholesale store and have around 10 bags in the trunk of our car. Whenever we would see people on the street corner with signs asking for help we would pull over and give them some food. A little preparation and forward thinking can make it really fun and easy to help those in need around you. And it helped weed out those who were being less then honest about their needs.

I like to give to the Savation Army- the bell ringers.

I would help out a friend and let them borrow $20 if they need it till paycheck.

Helping the poor in our communities can sometimes seem like an overwhelming thing to do.  Here, I share ideas on ways I have found to help in little ways over the years.  Just keeping an ear out for opportunities is sometimes all it takes.  While no one thing is a huge thing in and of itself, the little bits are perhaps better than nothing at all. read more

It dosent matter what you have...what matters is, how much you share it with others'....So each and ever way, no matter big or small of Helping people around us counts a lot ..it means much to them to feel there is someone who cares about them!

for me Helping someone in their education is the best way of helping people. since education makes a person self sufficient & capable of handling problems one can lead their lives with some happiness & smiles.........though i'm not a rich person but i'm happy God has made me able to contribute a little in making people happy,  i'm honestly working in this direction by bearing all expences of education of two poor boys in my locality .. it gives me lot of satisfaction & keeps me at peace!

" You can give a man a fish or you can teach him how to fish".

I guess it all depends on the person's needs. There are many factors in why someone in the situation . If they have just lost thier job,  I would give them jobs leads. If they need money for food I would do what is fit so that they can eat. If they are homeless and need shelf, then I would give them money for a shelter. But I think what helps the poor is information. Some peole are homeless because they have mental illness and need treatment. Helping poor people find programs for thier needs will help them for a life-time as appose to one day.
Boy this is a hard question to answer because it is situational.
