    They were "Dream Killers"!
Oh sure sometimes my mother would say:
"You can be anything you want to be."
However in the next breath she would prove she didn't mean it!
Looking back I don't blame her for her thoughts and beliefs having grown up in the south during times of civil unrest. It probably was thought best for them not to "dream big".
Learning a "trade" or blue collar skill was seen as being "realistic" while becoming a doctor was considered the "gold standard". Being an investor or entrepreneur was unheard of!
Just about every achievement I have accomplished I owe to the "self-help" section of bookstores and libraries which allowed me to reprogram my mind with (positive) self-talk & visualization.
At age 13 I read "Think And Grow Rich" which was the first of many books I would read about changing one's world from the "inside" out. I feasted on motivational/inspirational materials.

A bit of both. Well intentioned, yes. But not always doing the right job.
