First you must be passionate about the topic. Have a good ideal on the crux of the matter (what is the hook) and write the last chapter first. I like backward planning. It works very well for me. This will allow you to understand how you'll write the beginning chapters leading to the end of book.
Strange that you should ask this. I am sitting at Starbucks with 25 more pages to go before the final edit of my book is finished! The best way to approach a book is to be clear about your story long before you write it. By the time you put pen to paper, the characters must be so alive that they carry the story. They almost take a life of their own. When you have reached that point, you are ready to write.
The corollary to that is that if the story doesn't come, begin to read non-fiction that has a lot to do with your story. Years ago, the publisher of a company that specializes in publishing Nobel prize and Booker prize literature told me that all her fiction writers read non-fiction....
The non-fiction gives you the backdrop and the characters come much more easily when you have the backdrop. Hope that helps.
sit down and write the story from your heart. Turn your self-editor, inside of you off and just write. You'll be amazed at what comes out. After you write the first draft from your heart, then rewrite it, by turning your self editor back on, in the third revision, read the story, make sure that the story follows a natural narrative arc and hero's journey. Good luck. Just finished writing my YA Novel. It was a bear to write, but at least I finished it. 63000 words.

What is your biggest weakness and greatest strength as a writer? My biggest weakness is spelling and word transferring - I do have to be careful! For example with word transferring, if I'm typing too fast I often type 'there' instead of 'their' and so on. My biggest strength I guess is that I love...
