My favorite author is Mark Twain.  I have read much about his personal life and find that it makes me appreciate his work more.  Also, some of his work is autobiographical giving me more insight into his life.

Twain, I think, is an author you really can't help but get to know - and bless him for that! I am eagerly looking forward to reading those new rambling memoirs of his...

Actually, almost nothing, because it doesn't interest me that much... For instance, I love the books by Erich Maria Remarque and I do know that he is German and went through the 1st world war and the 2nd, although I think he wasn't an active participant during the 2nd, but nothing else... I think what interests me is in his books, actually he is in his books and what poured from him into the books is all I really want to know from him... He is there... The specifics, the bits and pieces... Not that important to me.

I find the lives of my favourite writers to be incredibly interesting, but that's because they had fascinating lives.  I am a huge fangirl of the war poets and love reading biographies of Sassoon, Owen, Graves and Brooke.  I've read diaries, letters, memoirs, the lot.  They lived in unusual times and knew lots of other interesting people, plus when you know about their personal lives you can see reflections of them in the poetry, adding another layer of meaning.

Mark Twain ranks very high for me as a favorite author.  He was a man of integrity and worked hard on the lecture circuit for years to pay off debts he incurred helping a relative finance his invention.  Unfortunately, the invention didn't work out and Mark had to labor into old age.

He admired U.S. Grant, and was instrumental in getting his memoirs published.

He had a lot of tragedy in his life, but kept his sense of humor for the most part.

I read a lot so I have quite a few favorite authors - Anne Rice, George RR Martin, Michael Connelly, Neil Gaiman, Judith McNaught, Sidney Sheldon, John Grisham - to name a few. I have read up on their backgrounds but I dont really delve too deep into it. I guess the stories they write are much more interesting than their real lives. :-)

I know a lot about Tim Winton, Western Australian the most famous writer, because he comes from the area where I recently live and he is very productive in writing. I regularly attend his environmentally oriented talks about saving our pristine coastline and review his newest plays and books. He is the most humble famous person I have ever seen. If you go to the beach in our area you bump to him on your way to surf and you have no clue who is he...

How fun to "rub noses" with a favorite author in such casual settings! I hadn't even thought of that - I'm so used to my favorite authors being long dead.

My favorite author is Tolkien.  I know that he was a professor of linguistics and a family man, but other than that, I don't really know much.
