Phrases Overused
Are there phrases that you feel in your country that are overused? What phrases bug you?
I think the phrase I allow to iritate me the most is the 'What is the best (whatever)of all time?' As if time has suddenly stopped and nothing else can be better, or we have to make the (whatever) seem really important so we apply, 'of all time' to it.. What is wrong with 'Up till now, what is the best...'?
Well, I don't think it covers the entire USA, but in the area where I've been for the last few years it's vocabulary that comes from the 'urban dictionary' and psychobabble. Both are irritating beyond compare.
I would say that the phrase 'tere baap ka rasta nahi hai' which means 'this is not your father's road' in Hindi is extremely overused here.
Who voted this comment down?I think that's rude considering she gave a perfectly fine answer to the question asked.
@Aditi - when people use that phrase, are they talking about actual roads? Is it symbolic for something? Just curious! (voted up!)
Thanks CynthiAnn! you're nice.
When people use this phrase, they mean this road belongs to everyone so you better follow the rules. It's generally used when people try changing lanes in a traffic jam or don't follow road rules and cause havoc.
The "text talk" mania drives me nuts! I have to admit that I do use abbreviations when I am texting or making comments on facebook, but it irks me when people use "LOL" and "BRB" and those other text abbreviations in casual vocal conversation. Our language is getting demoted down to letters..due to what? Laziness! Well, that's at least my opinion about it. :-P
I disdain to see someone include ".... in my humble opinion..." (IMHO) when they are writing something.....
C'mon.... when you're writing an opinion i KNOW it's your's, and it's humble... just get on with writing the darn thing..... IMHO doesn't ADD anything!!!!
I can't stand "My bad!" It is the most inane and banal way to take responsibility for one's actions. When someone accidentally rams their shopping cart into mine at the grocery store, I would rather be acknowledged with "Oh, I'm sorry about that," or "I apologize, I wasn't paying attention." "My bad" is short for "so I made a mistake, sue me! Get over it!" It's a snide, condescending expression.
I remember the 1995 movie "Clueless" in which Alicia Silverstone's character sideswipes another vehicle while taking her drivers license test, and her dismissive, simpleton response was a half-hearted "My bad" as she drove away. Yuck!
Well, sometimes "My Bad" is accompanied by an actual apology, like "Sorry", or "I apologize". You can measure the sincerity by the person's expression or gestures. Although many people do half-heartedly just say "My Bad" and don't really apologize.
I hate most tech buzzwords. SEO or search engine optimization. White hat + gray hat + black hat. Web 2.0. Web 3.0. Cloud computing. Hacktivism. And so on.

How will my same-sex marriage affect you?People say that gay marriage being legalised will affect their marriage, or them? I'd like to know how (I will provide my thoughts on the matter later - or look for the Gay Marriage thread on the forum - I answered it there!).So, I'm curious. I'm not...

What is the Shape of the Universe? (your own humble opinion)Some say it's in the shape of a shuttlecock, a saddle, a klein bottle or a Calabi-Yau space, elastic, static, expanding and expanding in some areas and shrinking in others. (IMHO=branes)

While keywords, as part of your article are indeed important to the SEO "thing," and, as part of your article, they should be spelled properly and in the correct grammatical format, the tags you add outside the article are also valuable.I am beginning to suspect, however, that when...
