How were little Golden Books, Tell-a-Tale books, etc. made in the 40s and 50s?

I'm wondering how those little cardboard books were made. What printing companies produced them? Why has this type of book publishing stopped? Is it because of the gluing process? It seems as if the glossy illustration cover was glued on to cardboard. Could this method be re-created? What exactly is that method called? I really can't find the REASON why this type of book printing doesn't seem to be in production anymore.

We used to live in Milw. so Western Publishing really marketed to our area. I'm curious as to how they performed that process. I imagine it wasn't difficult, but for some reason, we don't see it done exactly. I should write to them maybe?THANKS, C
