    Always take the opportunity to learn and expand your mind. Listening is one of the best ways to do that. Remember, we were given two ears and one mouth, so we could listen twice as much as we talked.

    Understanding, like when your child cries a certain way you just know what the problem is

    Great question. Listening is much more difficult than speaking. Especially active listening. I like the exercise of "mirroring", this is when after the speaker expresses their thoughts/idea the listener repeats it and see how well it matchs up with what the speaker was  trying to convey. I always feel very heard when someone does this with me. The most effective people in my opinion, in the family or work setting are those who take the time and energy to really listen and let the speaker know they are heard.
