What do you do while you write?

Like listen to music or watch TV.

I put myself in what I right, some of which are true accounts some are based on feelings. If I have trouble writing I go down to the lake and sit and just clear my mind.

Oddly enough, riding public transportation is my preferred 'thing to do' whilst writing. Maybe it's the moving forward that helps the words flow, or images flickering just out of reach - to the conscious me, unseen but noticed in the periphery while I bend to the page.

    I also like looking at (a) map(s).

I've done some of my most engaged reading while on public transportation.

I like your thought that the idea of moving forward literally might be a motivation. smile Perhaps it just is !

Before I write I do as much research on the topic as I can mangage. While I write I drink coffee. I do what you do when I am correcting my students' homework; it helps me focus.

I play music. I have a playlist of all my video game remixes, so it works perfectly as background music. I tend to stay away from the internet unless I have a topic or research question. If I'm not careful, I can get lost looking up facts and forget the reason for doing so!
Really, doing anything besides writing distracts me too much.

    LIsten to music, loudly.

Whether I am at my desk, a coffee shop, or at a park. It never fails to motivate me, and distract part of my brain so I can remain focused.

I often write with the television playing in the next room just to drown out outside noise. I would really prefer a quiet atmosphere, but that is not always possible.

I actually get most of my research done at night while laying in bed on my phone. I email myself info on the topic, as well as my first draft for the article. In the morning I work on writing/publishing my article. Usually I'm trying to write during my son's nap time, so it's usually quite in the room. Before he was born, I used to listen to rock, very loudly, whilst I wrote.

I like to be totally by myself when I write. Peace of mind and calm are important factors for me- and not loud music and stuff (No offense; to each his own)- as I express my work in words. A pen and a vessel (us) for writing.  And I feel that it should be so.

I listen to my local radio station.  It keeps me up to date on news and public opinion as there is a current affairs talk show in the mornings.

I like it on in the background and mentally tune in and out as I write.  If a topic is too interesting, it can be a distraction and if I need to concentrate especially hard I'll turn the sound of for 10 minutes or so until I've finished writing the part I was stuck on.
