The Pit and the Pendulum and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. Second in line consists of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

    H. P. Lovecraft: A Shadow out of Time. One could argue that this short story is more science fiction than horror, but it carries with it the cthulhu mythos that makes H. P. Lovecraft's stories so engaging and haunting to read.

My first choice would be the classic writers like Poe, Lovecraft, Bloch, Sturgeon, and than the more modern horror writers like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, and Richard Matheson all could turn out a really good scary story.
