I may add several answers after I think about this question some more. The best love poem is :Sonnets from the Portuguese 43: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.." by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. This simple poem describes the power of love in this life and hoped for continuance in the the next. yikes)

Any of the poems written on my hubpages smile  Seriously though, the nineteenth century poets from Longfellow to Poe to Keats were some of the best poets I've ever read.  They had a grip on imagery, style and flow.  Their poems have meaning and displayed conscious thought and awareness of people and the world around them.  When I read poetry for pleasure and inspiration, the above poets are my favorite reads.

This question can never be answered. There is no one best. Each person has their opinion as to what makes something the best, so you will never find one that everyone agrees on.  W H Auden's poem, Funeral Blues, is one of my all time favorites. A good poem or story pulls out feelings and makes you drowned in them. Therefore, it will be different for each person. You will need to find your own.

There is no best poem...only what we consider to be our favorite. Tears on the trail is mine.

Poetry is subjective.  What I would consider the best poem in the world, you may disagree.  I've written poems about love lost, death of a child and my cat eating butter, it can be all over the lot.  I like poems that a really raw with emotion, those are usually poems that people can identify with.

The best poem in the world was written by someone very special to me and exists in the writer's mind and my own heart.

I agree with Theater...it is such an individual thing; when I write or read poetry... it all depends on the moment, mood, and what i'm seeking at that time...everyday is different

    The best poem written
is one that you alone must seek.
The world abound has many words:
mighty and grand; humble and meek.
Alas, with your mind insight and your heart in tow,
    find a secret place-
and perhaps among the stillness your answer will grow...

Without doubt, the greatest poem ever written is "King Borriah Bungalee Boo" and it can be found in the Bab Ballads.
Check it out and you will have to agree...
