I have no idea about children nowadays, but the book series that got me into reading was Redwall.
My six-year old will always check out Berendysin Bears when we are at the library. My 12-year old loves the story lines of the novels by Rick Riordan but is more likely to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and other graphic novels on his own.
