Who's your favorite author and why? American or British?

Shakespeare is by far one of my all time favorite writers/authors. The way he wrote just spoke to me and inspired me to start writing on my own.

Raymond Chandler. Master of the his genre. Captured the feeling of 1930s/40s LA.  Created one of the greatest detective characters of all time, Phillip Marlowe.  Less than 10 novels, but his short story output was incredible, especially for Black Mask. And we can't forget that he wrote the screenplay for Double Indemnity (w/Billy Wilder).

I don't think I have a 'favorite' author, but I can name a few whom I'm quite fond of. Wayne Dyer, Dale Carnegie, Ayn Rand to name a few. For me, authors attain 'favorite' status during certain points in my life, usually when I'm going through something / need an escape. However, it's easy to forget their influence on you once you've put a book down. I've never actually gotten into Shakespeare except while in school, I'll have to check some of his stuff out again!
