How do you know when you need a new slow cooker?

I have a slow cooker that was a gift. The brand is Rival. It seems to cook too hot. Everything I have ever made in it burns. I'm just about ready to throw it out the window! I had an old crock pot that worked wonders this new one hasn't successfully made one meal! I know Rival isn't a great brand but I wonder are all new slow cookers no good? Does anyone recommend a particular brand and model? Or any tips for slow cooking? I would greatly appreciate it.

When the settings start to get out of wack, maybe the high setting is cooking too quickly or the low setting seems to not be cooking at all. It may be rust on the inside or too small. In your case, you may just need an upgrade. They are inexpensive and come in different sizes to fit your needs.

Thanks for the advice. I actually found a great article here that gave me some insight to what I might be doing wrong. http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/01 … ecipe.html  here it is if you're interested too

The only way I know of anything burning is because there is no liquid in the pot.

If you did add enough liquid as instructed and it dried up is maybe your cooking time is off or the cooker is turned up too high and or left unattended to long.

Some of these slow cookers do have timers that will turn them off after a set period of time.. If all of the above are checked out and you did not leave it unattended too long, maybe there is a malfunction in the slow cooker.

You must add enough liquid when cooking for a long period of time or a short period of time.. Most of these slow cookers come with recommendations as to how much liquid to add for certain foods.

Thanks and you're absolutely right about the liquid. I have been following the recipes exact but maybe its not enough liquid for the size of my slow cooker which isn't big its 6quarts(maybe). Thanks for the advice.
