   Probably either George Washington or John Quincy Adams. One of them created a government from scratch and then let it go without permanently taking it over. The other spared the American people by (thankfully) doing nothing notable for four years.

   I think Abraham Lincoln, he was able to preserve the Union.

   This question was asked a few weeks ago.
   
   At that time I said it was George Washington because he created the office, did not let it develop any royal trappings and limited himself to two terms which became customary until Roosevelt ran for a third and fourth term, at which time the Constitution was amended to limit the person to two terms.
   
   Washington comes in first.
   Lincoln comes in second and
   Harry Truman comes in third--having the courage to use the atomic bomb and working hard to rebuild Europe in record time.

      Well thank you for the honesty and I will look a little harder to make sure it has been a while since a question was asked.  I just never saw the question even after hitting the similar question suggestion.

   If I'm not mistaken most historians rate Lincoln #1 and Roosevelt #2 and Washington or Jefferson #3. That works for me. (Larry, I'm a Truman fan also. My grandmother grew up down the street from Bess Truman.
