For the majority of people it is not the help that is the issue but instead the manipulation of the system. Many get services that they do not actually need, lie about their income, work jobs they won't claim as having, and just generally take advantage. I support elderly or disabled people getting benefits. I do not support the drug dealers and users getting benefits.

Because the abuses get all the publicity and people don't seem to look further for the real info.

Because we listen to stats without breaking them down to the real story.

Because we do not inform ourselves past the local or party driven news channels and what we read on some of the Social media sites.

Because when life gets tougher it is easier to have someone to blame for the problems than seek the solutions.

Because we are being fed that greed and materialism is the badge of success in this society and if you do not make it, it is ALWAYS your own fault.

Because we have not learned that a good government provides a safe and healthy haven for its citizen and that is not free nor doable on just a local level.

Because we are so busy taking sides we rarely come to the conclusion that most of us actually want the same thing, a job, a safe home a happy family and prosperous peaceful country.

We think more alike than not.

I agree with peeoples and think most of us want the government to help people who really need it.  But, our government is wracked with dishonesty and abuse of the political process and that is what we have to stop.  If the bill to help Hurrican Sandy victims had not been loaded with fat for other issues, the people would have had help weeks ago.  This is where we the people need to start standing up.  A bill should only contain matters pertaining to the original bill.  If politicians want more for other issues, let them introduce a separate bill.

Maybe the pork is added with hopes of getting at least a few needed things done, since the GOP part of the congress seems to mostly worry about legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which states are now busily implementing.

Most people see many examples of others gaming the system. Whether it be someone who is simply not in need or individuals or groups adding pork that ends up stalling or killing an effort to help those truly in need. Also, it should be noted that there are some people that simply don't care or feel that government should not play this role even when helping the people is necessary.
