Why doesn't the government seem to care enough about education?

   Has anyone noticed that the focus is never REALLY on education?  It's like the red-headed step-child of political hopefuls.  If they don't pretend to care, they don't stand a chance getting elected, but if they really cared, they wouldn't get to be prominent in politics, because the incumbent politicians won't let them become popular! When will they realize that they are ruining the economy and future job-force when they continue to look the other direction!  Blame the teachers? What about the neglectful parents?  Then again, the parents are the result of the last generation of students in our education system!  Kids don't have books in their houses before they enter school in Kindergarten! Many parents don't know the answers to their fourth grader's math questions!  Maybe it's because politicians are sending their kids to Private Schools!

      In America, for the most part we fund our schools through the outdated tool of property taxes, which instantly creates a situation of the haves verse the have nots.  Further, what we pay our teachers is deplorable, and we the taxpayer set those salaries by the votes we cast for school levies. 
      
      I have no kids, and my property taxes are ALREADY TOO HIGH for the home that I have in the neighborhood in which I live...so, I vote against ALL SCHOOL LEVIES.
      
      You will see education of our youth improve when we go to a fair means of funding schools...a National Sales tax that is equally shared among ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

   It is not fair to find fault with others for everything. As said, not only parents were one-time students. Every politician and every teacher were one-time students. Everyone should fight his or her way through to achieve their goal. Without taking initiative and accusing others of not attending to education field, how can one come up? Every parent is the first teacher for children. They should create a flame in the child's heart to achieve their goal with determination. The government and politician can only increase the education expenditure. It is the concern of the parents and children to avail the concessions and come up in life. No one has achieved their heights smoothly, except politicians' heirs.

   The "government" doesn't care about anything. The "government" has only one interest, to perpetuate and grow itself. What matters is the people, and in education, relying on the federal government to make us better has proved to be a bad decision. In order for education to truly improve politics must be removed from the system and the system must be infused with a generous dose of reality! Kids, teachers and administrators must learn that real life is a competition, that only the ones equipped with the tools required to compete and win will thrive. They all must learn that there are winners and there are losers, and if you want to enjoy the rewards of being a winner, then you must be prepared! For too long we have coddled our children, given them all trophies regardless of where they placed in a race. We've paid them in cash to do their homework and we've taught them that everyone is the same, everyone is equal, when nothing is further from the truth.

   As an Australian it amuses me to see that Americans discuss their education, politics etc without considering the internet is not American, believe it or not there are other countries in the world too.

      I'm sure we Americans meant no offense. We are well aware there are other nations in the world and this discussion is debating the politics of US education and why, in comparison to the rest of the nations in the world is the US losing ground.

   I thought it was religion that was meant to control the masses. It seems to me that education, (controlled, or denied) may be another tool in "their" arsenal.
   "Keep them stupid, and keep them under control".
   Teach them just enough to rule over them"
   Oh, and lets not forget, "milk them for all their worth",(financially I mean).

   Yep... In my county, our school board has opted to spend tons and tons on a new school board building  that really wasn't necessary. At the same time, they 're trying to get a bill passed to short all teachers 3 days of pay. Bet the school board employees aren't getting shorted.
   
   Why cut the number of teachers and pay of current teachers? It's just going to make those people need another job. I know several teachers who have 2 or 3 jobs to include teaching because they can't afford living expenses. That's just not right, especially when most of them have working spouses.
   
   Education is very important, and even though there are a number of people who want to go into teaching, it's sad to say that it's just not the right field to go into if you want to be able to survive.
   
   It's a great thing to go to school for and study, especially in hopes that the economy will get better and education will boost back up in the eyes of politicians and officials. But, who can really spend the time to get a teaching degree and hope that it will be a livable field by the time you've gotten the degree?
   
   I've strongly considered getting a degree in k-6 education, but I can't wait to hope I'll be able to use that degree one day. It's sad and unfortunate, but I just can't afford going to school to get a degree I may or may not be able to use anytime soon.

   My youngest is in uni to learn teaching in Australia. there is strong demand for male teachers, he loves kids, and the pay is good enough although not as much as he could earn if he just taught math.He does not care that he could earn more elsewhere, it is what he loves, and I feel they are very lucky to have him. He has great academic skills so could have done law or medicine.
