Why are people so interested in private lives of celebrities?

This is something I had always wondered myself. Thanks for asking this so I could get an answer. I agree with the majority it has to be boredom in order for them to focus so hard on someone elses life.

I think its because a lot of people want to live their lives so they follow their lives and live through them.

I guess its because we never get to see the real person, just their character. so we're naturally curious as to what they are like.

I think its because people are instinctively attention seekers. They want everyone to know who they are and want to be easily recognized by anybody and everybody.  Even if you don't admit it, it is probably one of the reasons you want to become famous.
Also like everyone has said already, people want to know what is like to live a life that we have never experienced before because we are also naturally curious about things.  Any normal persons life is boring to us because we live the same life everyday and want to experience something new, a thrill, or a high.
We may also think of all the good things we hear about being a celebrity and think automatically that it is the life for me. We wouldn't think about the bad things that come with being famous, like dealing with your entire life being public.  If you do think about it, we probably think "ahhh, I can handle that," so it is what we aspire to be, celebrities.

Some people are bored with their own life and it intrigues them how the rich and famous live.

We love to see them in television screen big screens and thus we try to follow them to whom we love the most. If you talk about Mr. Arnold He is the best inspirational package for every Man. I too love to see him as he is a great body builder and an actor as well. I love his movie commando. In this movies his bid muscles inspire me and motivated me to indulge myself into exercise. Now i do exercise and i do often watch his competitions. But the thing to judge you guys might be very difficult coz you both are looking like same but Mr. Arnold has less body and muscles as you do have lolz. Keep exercising if you want to be like him. Personal lives tell us how the celebrities are and what do they do. If there is something good at there we will definitely try to adopt that thing. That's all i wanted to say.

I guess it makes a good conversation topic for a lot of people, plus gossip is interesting to many, and gossiping celebrities is the easiest ans safest way to do it as these are people who you do not personally know, but yet you know a lot of their personal information. So I guess it's a win-win situation!

I do not care one bit about celebrities. Maybe people care because they just need an outlet from their own lives.

People are naturally curious of other people's lives. It is just that celebrities are the ones often written about so they are the ones being judged. But look into your neighborhood and you'll find many individuals who know about the private lives of their neighbors.

On the opposite end these celebs have a very hard life.  There is always expectation to keep their "image alive".  They are hounded by the media and papparazzi.  Comments are made about how they appear in public. Outrageous
behavior is used to attract more attention to them to let the viewers they are still  popular. Years ago, they had to be "above approach" - like in an ivory tower. Back then they were gods and goddesses, idolized by the common person. After WWII, america was building; movie stars were a fantasy entertainment for twenty five cents to escape their hard working world.  The average man and woman could relax at a movie at the end of a work week. There was no TV in those days.

I feel sorry for the stars today. It is a tough row to stay on top.  There is always someone new to take your place.  Whether in business or show business - that's life!

I think people like to learn about those in the spotlight. Celebrity has been painted to be so desirable in today's society, that if you don't know about the latest celebrity goings ons you're often persona non grata. Many people want to get as close to fame as they possibly can, and for many the closest they can get to it is keeping up-to-date with the latest celebrity news.

People really doing things in society that benefit us all (curing diseases etc) are those we should wish to celebrate and emulate. Unfortunately we don't and they remain unsung heroes. On the plus side this is probably what they prefer to be anyway.

I have no idea. It is beyond reasoning how a celebrity is some how more deserving of the populace's attention than the plight of our economy. When the Kardashian girl divorced her husband you would have thought the world was going to end or something. What do these people do to deserve such international attention? Come out with a perfume or clothes line? Like we need another one of those?
There are so many other more important issues that should be at the top of the news instead of these vain, vapid people. I'm too busy trying to make a living to pay attention to all their nonsense.

Because we have been brainwashed into thinking their lives are better, more interesting and more worthy than our own.
It's unbelievable and a false perception and despite working with celebrities I don't care about their personal lives at all and never read the tabloids...

I think it's a natural curiosity to know if they are as human as we are, with the same faults as we have, the same actions and reactions thay we exhibit to situations, and the like.

Because celebrities get to live the life many secretly wish they could live.  They are allowed to make mistakes in the public eye and somehow they almost always bounce right back from it.  They have the means and the fame to travel, date, shop, basically to experience all there is to experience, and we can live vicariously through them.

People love to gossip and judge others, especially when they feel that their own lives are humdrum and uneventful. When people tut tut over celebrities' behaviour, they can feel self-righteous about their own behaviour, and avoid looking at their own faults. Certain newspapers and television programmes exploit and encourage puerile and salacious interest in celebrity gossip because their owners make money from it. While people's brains are busy contemplating celebrity misdeeds, they are not thinking about what is going on in the world, it is Roman bread and circuses all over again.

One celebrity I know told me that it is a real pain to families. Children see the gossip on the front of womens and teens gossip magazines because their classmates bring them to school and come home in tears and traumatised.

    Articles along the lines of 'so and so (husband) is cheating; poor (wife) in tears' and it may is show two photos;

One a single image from a highspeed film where the male celebrity is blinking, which looks like a downward glance, just as a girl is walking past.

And a second photo (taken months earlier) that shows his partner brushing something out of her eye, which has been kept because it makes her look like she is crying.

Then the article will say "a friend said" or "close family have stated" which of course is all bull.

This sort of stuff feeds the public and hurts children but people fall for it all the time not realising the damage it does to the families of these celebrities who, really, are just ordinary people.

I believe most people are interested in the private lives of celebrities because it appears as if they live a life set apart from everyone else, however as soon as something awful happens which puts them in a situation that society is personally used to, many people want to see how a celeb will go about dealing with the problem.Divorce, bankruptcy, any kind of dysfunctional mishap seems to intrigue the public especially when it happens to a celebrity.

This obsession is merely a sign of a bored superficial society and latent gossiping.
Its an unhealthy trend stirred up by the media's insatiable appetite to fill pages with something, anything!

I am not interest in the private life of celebrities, they are entertainers through mass media, I only care about the movie I like, TV show I like or the songs I like, I don't care about their private life at all.

I'm really don't care what goes on in the private life of a celebrity, but I am super curious as to what goes on in the private life of a celebrity tabloid "journalist".

You've got to have a pretty crazy life if you're willing to make a career of camping out on someone's rooftop, relieving yourself into a bucket, to get a picture of the celebrity next door eating a chimichanga and caption it "Spurned ex-lover turns to binge eating" (or something equally crazy).

Maybe it has got to do something with the fact that we all subconsciously crave for attention. We want to be popular, want to be heard, want to be seen and followed. When we fail to do so, we take relief in following someone else who has achieved fame. We try to peep into their lives to find out if they too are like us or not, if not, what makes them different. To find if they really are how they look from outside. And to find anything that we can put to use in our own lives to make us more happy and satisfied.

Honestly I am one of those people who are really interested in the private lives of celebrities. People think that celebrities aren't normal people like you and me and they are fascinated with their lives and what they do on a daily basis. An example like the Kardashians, I know they aren't a fan favorite however people don't see them as normal people because of how much money they have and all the privileges they have also. We envy celebrities because they have what we don't have.
