Should a man be jailed for mocking a disabled girl?
William Bailey, 43, was caught imitating the walk of a disabled girl with cerebral palsy, and was jailed for one month.
Probably not jailed for a month, but something more effective. Perhaps there would be enough men in their community to take him aside and threaten him within an inch of his life for his behavior, then call a public meeting in which he gets to genuinely apologize to her, her family, and their community or get the beating he deserves. One way or another, the man needs to grow up.
I thought the youtube posting and bad press he got was worse because now everyone hates his guts for being such an immature, insensitive jerk. I think a fine is more appropriate. But this is what happens when courts become too politically correct.
After checking back here I watched the vids. Apparently the offender lied to cover his behavior, yet in the end he did make a public apology that at least sounds sincere. He now has a chance to prove his repentance by responding maturely.
Morally wrong, yes. Legally wrong, on what grounds? This does seem much too harsh of a punishment. Maybe community service working with the disabled and see what they have to go through on a day to day basis, but a month in jail? Wondering what the charges were?
He got the maximum sentence for disorderly conduct and aggravated menacing. It's totally wrong and it was a frame up. The law shouldn't be misused like this just because the guy's a jerk.
No Jail, but if someone had slapped him severely about the face and ears, I would have walk away smiling. Getting caught on Camera and it being posted on youtube is Karma!
If you read up on it, mocking the girl was not the reason he was jailed. It was a culmination of several things including threatening the life of the grandmother.
None of the news reports mention any threats against the grandmother's life and that's not why he was in court.
Read this article from ABC: "Man Sentenced to Jail After Teasing Disabled Girl" It explains how the menacing charge again the mother-in-law carries a 30 day sentence and all charges were combined.
I did not hear this story but mocking is not a crime that the legal system can handle. In todays society we want to put people in jail for anything but we forget that we do have rights that stop that from happening. What we also forget though, is we have something that is even more powerful than our legal system, and that is our society. There is no reason why he should get away with this, and don't prefer violence, but I think there are ways for him to pay for his actions. The community should get together and take him (forcibly is needed) to a place with disabled people to understand their lives. This would be more effective and we do need to remember that people can not be imprisoned for just anything, but that going to jail or paying a fine is not the only punishment one can endure.
If the law states that is considered disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace or aggravated harassment then he is pretty much out of luck. My buddy got fined swearing in front of children.

people always knew what they wanted to be from early childhood. They find it totally implausible that there are those who are still indecisive regarding career choices even as teenagers and/or young adults. They contend that they knew what they wanted to do as children, so should other...
