How has Conservativism in the United States has become retrogressive, even veering to the
extreme right? How has Conservativism in the United States devolved into a more retrogressive philosophy & mindset?
I know virtually nothing about American politics. However, surely the world Conservatism means "to conserve." That is, to conserve WHAT IS. It is to stand still, remain with the status quo (and I'm not having a dig at any political party here)
The word Liberal has a far less rigid meaning, but the 'Conservative' Party in Australia is called the Liberal Party.
Has the USA become more conservative? My answer would be that America, like every other nation, has its Ultra Conservatives, just as it has the very opposite: those who want to leave ALL that is behind.
Fortunately, the bulk of people fall somewhere along a line between these two extremes.
I disagree with the premise of your question.
I think Americans have been deceived by the media and the left that paints a distorted picture about Conservatives.
I challenge anyone to tune in to talk radio and just listen to Rush for 3 hours and I am willing to bet they will take away with a different view of Rush Limbaugh. What does that tell you?
They have no clue about what conservatives stand for, only what they have been fed about what Rush said... Usually a distortion.
If anyone is interested in learning about what conservatism is all about, check out my hubs. "conservatism defined" and a few other related hubs.
The other great miss conception is that America is center politically. By most polls, America is 40% conservative, 30% liberal and 30% independent.
The other term "extreme" is also associated with conservatives when in reality, most conservative beliefs are center and common sense.
My suggestion is for you to forget what you've been told about conservatism or conservatives and just go out and find out for yourself. You may just be surprised.
I agree, and that is a problem when we rely on labels without details. Can you define pornography, no because everyone sees it diff. The same is true for any label.
Liberals brand themselves love and conservatives haters. Good branding, but not true. But it lets them ignore other views as "evil" and denigrate conservatives in one fell swoop, while feeling morally superior just for being liberal.
It is the left that has become outright authoritarian seeking to silence the speech of those they disagree with, threatening violence on gatherings of conservatives.
