Why do some Americans believe that the government has the obligation to provide a comfortable life for them?   What makes these Americans feel that the government should give them everything they need?  When will they realize that if they want a good life, they have to PROVIDE such a life THEMSELVES?

Because they are told that.  Because govt. searches them out and offers money.  Because there is no longer any shame in accepting charity; the only shame comes in not getting as much as the next person does of all that "free money".

Totally agree.  It seems that hard work is for suckers & getting freebies is a badge of honor.   Where is the morality in this?

If you disagree with these policies, then you will vote for those who also disagree with them, right?  These programs were established by duly elected representatives of the people. I'm sickened by the amount of money poured into our defense budget every year so I vote for those who favor tightening that budget. That's how it works.

I have been told by newly arrived immigrants that family members and others actually help them get all the govt. assistance they can. Those that don't get all they can, are considered stupid.
I don't think American citizens are this way.
        Surely.

The unpatriotic ones feel this way. Most people are patriotic and pull their own weight ...

      I hope.

I totally agree. It feels so rewarding to have worked and accomplished the life I wanted for my family and me.  It's a feeling only those that have worked and accomplished share. I enjoy calling my own shots and do not understand why anyone would accept a government that would stifle freedom to thrive and prosper.

Totally agree.   I enjoy EARNING my way.  However, there are those who feel that it is a badge of honor to get freebies &/or otherwise depend upon the government.    If you want a certain lifestyle, work for it.   I have gotten several promotions at work.   I refuse to understand why some contend that others should pay the former's way in life.

PP brings up a good point. I was wondering yesterday how much more we could afford for social programs if we didn't have to spend money on defense.

Yes, it's all a matter of priorities.  That is why we vote for those whose values and priorities most closely match our own.  When people say something like what wilderness said, "Because govt. searches them out and offers money.", I chuckle because "government" cannot do anything of the sort.  People can, and they do probably make an effort to reach struggling children and families who need the services that our citizens, through their votes, have decided are important.

Sadly, no matter how many jobs become available, no matter how many employable people join the work force there will be those who need help. A society that turns its back on those in need is not a society I would want to be a part of.

We need to be better at determining the difference between need and sloth.

True. So, when is the government going to do their job and govern?

If your legislator is not doing their job, fire them.  Vote someone else in.

Good honest help can save lives and make lives matter. There is a lot of help out there that is not true help. I remember a friend of mine telling me how his family would help others in their family financially, like start a business or recover from a setback. But, it was always a loan. Never a hand out.

People ought to work for their services & lifestyles.  If they want health insurance, PAY for it.  If they want education, PAY for it.  No one owes anyone anything.   Social programs only make people lose initiative & become lazy.   Cut welfare & social programs by 85-95% & you will see how America IMPROVES!

Are you kidding? you are posting this HERE? This HubPage land of socialists? It just seems like there are so many who are advocating socialism. What do you think about that, gmwilliams?

OH, YES I DID!  I SAID IT! YES, I SAID IT...…………  I will never advocate socialism.  Socialism is merely subcategory of communism.  I believe in unbridled capitalism.    Capitalism permits one to rise according to his/her capabilities.   It is DO or DIE in capitalism.  That is what I LOVE about capitalism!
