Lori Loughlin & Felicity Huffman - Jail time?

So what are the odds that Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman (and their husbands) see jail time?

Both were implicated in a wide-ranging college admissions bribery scandal. Since their kids weren't smart enough, they made sure that they paid enough money to certain people who got their kids into the colleges they wanted. Huffman paid to have her child's SAT scores raised (as in, faked, because she paid the proctor) and Loughlin "enhanced" her child's admission by faking that she was on the crew team.

Anyway, that's how I understand it. They cheated to get their kids into the schools.

    Do you care?

Should they go to jail? If so, for how long?

Yes, they should be subject to our justice system. They broke the law.  Whether jail time is involved is up to that same justice system.

I'm really asking what you think. Yes, they broke the law. Do you feel like the justice system should throw the book at them or be lenient?

I don't think they should do jail time. However, as it appears they clearly understood what they were doing was wrong/illegal, I do think they should pay hefty monetary cost. It should be a penalty that is real punishment and not a symbolic slap on the wrist.

Wouldn't it be ironic justice if these parent's fines were substantial enough to fund a scholarship program for students from low-income families? That would be sweet justice.

I also think the children of all these parents should have to reapply on their own merits.

I think the coaches and facilitators should lose their jobs. And the ring leader should be subject to jail time if the charges include it.

I agree with all those saying a severe monetary penalty would probably be the best for society. Jailing them doesn't do much.

However, consider the case of a woman given 5 years for voting illegally in Texas:

Sure, this is all apples and oranges, but the inequality of our justice system between the poor and the wealthy does motivate me to cheer for them to do some jail time.

Crank, I kinda agree with you. Sometimes it takes making an example out of the crook to discourage others. As one young lady put it, when they cheated to get their children in, they cheated a deserving student out of an education at that school. So in a way they were stealing (someone more deserving's time) and should be made an example of.

Mr. Anderson,  there ISN'T going to be jail time.  Lori & Felicity have their legal guns.   Their wealth & status are their shield.   They have privilege.  Privileged people, for the most part, don't do jail time.   This is societal favoritism.   Those in the dominant classes are always favored while those in the subordinate classes are disfavored, even punished when they make mistakes or commit offenses.   A good book regarding this subject is THE CHEATING CULTURE by David Callahan.

A cheating culture is corruption. Stop the corruption.

Lori & Felicity AREN'T going to do jail time.  Wealth covers that.   They will hire high priced attorneys who will ascertain that they won't face jail time.  Wealthy people always had the means to get their children into college one way or another.   This has been occurring for decades, c'mon now.  It is only recently that such wealthy parents are getting caught!

I don't know that jail time is appropriate. Mainly because I see jail as being used more to protect society from violence than anything else, while rehabilitating. I don't see them as a danger to society or capable of being rehabilitated. I'd hit them where it hurt. Debilitating fines. They thought money meant the rules didn't apply to them. Take away their money.

I agree. Make them pay the college tuition for a bunch of other kids. Set up a fund and make sure some deserving non-rich kids get to go to college.

That's still just a slap on the wrist. Unless they are barred from Hollywood, they can just make up the money they've lost in a couple of films.

Lori & Felicity aren't about to see jail terms.  Their wealth will make sure of that.  They are doing what many wealthy parents have done but THEY were CAUGHT!     This bribing is nothing new.  This is a normal occurrence but until recently it has been covert- VERY COVERT.

I agree with jail time. Whatever the legal penalty is. Stop with the deal-making already!

There isn't going to be jail time.  Wealthy people typically don't go to jail(there are some very minute exceptions).  That is what high priced lawyers are for- to keep them out of jail.  Wealthy people, on average, are smart, even cunning- that is why they are where they are.   Wealthy people will hire qualified lawyers who will defend them & keep them out of jail.  MONEY TALKS-ALWAYS! How many times must I say this!

But it shouldn't. Ideally, just throw them in jail and let them deal with their consequences.
        What's so hard about that?
It will be a lesson for others.
Break the law ... legal consequences.
And prevent it from happening again and again.
        It should never happen, ever.
