It seems defunding the police isn't doing well in New York City

Black Leaders Call on NYPD to Bring Back Anti-Crime Unit as Shootings Spike

"Leaders in the black community are calling on the New York Police Department to bring back the plainclothes Anti-Crime Unit that was eliminated last month as shootings and murders spike across the city.

About 600 undercover officers from the unit were set to be transferred to other assignments including detective work and policing neighborhoods, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said a month ago. The anti-crime unit, which was responsible for getting guns off the streets, had been criticized as stoking distrust in law enforcement in minority communities.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, one of the African-American voices calling for action on gun violence, criticized the police force’s decision to completely disband the unit. He deplored the recent deadly shooting of a one-year-old, one of the victims of New York City’s recent spike in gun violence."

I hope someone explains how you can't have it both ways.

Sadly enough many New York police officers are throwing in the towel. I would surmise many have done so due to the lack of support they are getting from the Mayor, and the mere thought of being defunded, which could only work to make their jobs even more difficult and very dangerous.

"The New York Police Department has seen a "surge" in the number of officers filing for retirement, according to Sgt. Mary Frances O'Donnell, who called the trend "troubling.

From June 29 to July 6, filings soared 411% from the same period a year earlier, according to O'Donnell, a spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information."

It would seem the citizens would consider recalling the mayor. What a situation for citizens to have to endure. I would think New York could be looked at as an example of what this new kind of lack of law and order offers communities. Once again this weekend there were nine shootings.

It's up to the citizens of New York to be heard, recall the Mayor, look for someone that will return law and order, or live with the Mayor they voted into the position and all his twisted ideology.

    Mike:
Defunding the police seems like a bad idea to me. Apparently, it isn't working out very well. Christmas has come early for the criminals in America.

      Doug,

      I agree with you.

When I think of all the insane ideas of the left...defunding the police is top of the list.  It makes me wonder if they comprehend reality.  It's almost as if they live in their own little Utopian bubble and refuse to see anything that doesn't please them.

It's like they said. Laws are for the lawless. Law abiding citizens have nothing to fear from cops and everything to fear from those hoping to defund them.

Excellent point!  It's why Democrats are afraid for law-abiding citizens to have firearms...but blatantly ignore the number of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals. They want to punish the law-abiding and encourage the lawless.  I think this is the Democrat way.

The way of the democrats in charge of the party right now.

They've lost all touch with reality.

Democrats have lost touch with reality and openly mock it!
