DeSantis declared an end to the 'corporate kingdom' before signing the bill into law.
This comes on the heels of Gov. Ron DeSantis signing a bill that prevents classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation through the third grade.
The bill revokes Disney’s special tax privileges in the state which have been in place since the late 1960s.
“They have the ability to build a nuclear power plant without state consent if they want,” DeSantis said Friday. “No individual or no company in Florida is treated this way, and it’s not right to have this similar treatment but you know they had exercised a lot of power over the years.” Gov DeSantis
"Since the 1960s, they’ve enjoyed privileges unlike any company or individual in the state of Florida has ever enjoyed," DeSantis said at a news conference held at a firehouse minute away from Disney World. "They had exemptions from laws that everyone else had to follow. They were able to get huge amounts of benefits without paying their fair share of taxes."
Gov DeSantas
Republicans in the Florida Legislature responded swiftly by passing a bill that would remove Disney’s special tax status on June 1, 2023.
The Florida House passed the bill on Thursday after DeSantis called on the Legislature to back the measure during its special session this week. -- House lawmakers passed the bill in a 68-38 vote after the Senate’s 23-16 vote on Wednesday.
I haven't explored this topic, but I did see an opposing view that said it will cost the state more to re-create and run the municipality responsibilities that Disney was paying for. *shrug
I wonder what laws — outside of criminal statutes — Disney was exempt from?

Disney has never had to follow Government building codes or environmental codes.

I did dig up this article that provides some information on Disney, in regard to it being somewhat self-governing but still must follow Florida, as well as Federal laws. https://law.stackexchange.com/questions … d-the-unit
I am perplexed that Florida legislators did not at best put out some financial stats on what they feel they would gain by upsetting this apple cart. Taxpayers will not be happy if their taxes are raised to pay for a personal type of political riff with Disney.
Disney is decadent and woke. They should be banned in every state.
I am sure there are ways of increasing what Disney has to pay to maintain its services.
Disney charges a premium sum to those who visit, they should have to pay a premium tax to help the State maintain its roads and other resources.
It is probably a 'sure thing' that DeSantis opponents will offer an analysis of the additional cost to Florida after the process of switching becomes operational and hard numbers are available.
If that doesn't happen, then it will be the DeSantis supporters waving their analysis.
We'll have a better idea then. It's fortunate for me that I don't know because my gut says this action is purely political. If so, it's dishonest, and that stinks.

I'm not familiar with the issue. But it should be interesting to observe the ongoing discussion on the famous Disney world.
I have been doing some research on the subject --- It is so complicated. Not sure how this all will turn out, not only for Disney but for DeSantis politically.
I think we will need to wait to see how this all affects the citizens of Florida. DeSantis has promised them no increase in taxes... This would be a big mess for him if he can't keep that promise.
I have not been able to find anything on what or if Florida will gain more funds from Disney or if will they lose more than they were getting.
Interesting and politically significant. I can infer now that Disney can hardly pump enough money into the Florida State Trearury. Or it should be pay peanuts and tax break returns periodically. Hopefully, your research will yield some significance. Thanks.
they's always an alternate for the better in such a scenario.
It looks like Desantis and Disney are headed for 'Round 2". Disney changed some of the governing board (now Desantis-controlled) agreements and reduced the board's control in some areas (inferred to be big areas by the descriptor "eviscerated").
Disney's Florida surprise: an end run around DeSantis
"Disney said its action was proper.
"All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida's Government in the Sunshine law," Walt Disney World resort said in a statement."
I'm betting Disney's legal support will be sound and that DeSantis will overreact.
Consider the voting blocks that are most likely to be Disney supporters (as in customers, not ideology). Due to income factors alone, I think they would be Moderates and Independents. They aren't the Trump base so he will go after Disney and I think DeSantis will ignore them (any that he might have and all that he will need), and try to out-Trump Trump.

Good to noted and know that at the moment. But who would win the second round or so? De Santis or Watt Disney?
