HP? Do yourself a favor. Set a word count limit on your discussion boards. Some of your participants are killing discussion by the length of their comments. They are too enamored of their own thoughts.

For me personally if it's too long I simply don't read it.

Yeah, but it's tough on the scrolling finger and mentally chastising when I finally remember to right-click the mouse for smooth scroll.

Naw - if I push my button down, let go and then move the mouse up or down, the page scrolls.  I just don't want to read all that.  lol

You see, that's what I meant. It's no wonder I keep forgetting to "press the scroll wheel" for the smooth scroll you describe . . .

Thinking  "Right-click' I must be forgetting where it is.

Being an odd duck and curious I did an experiment. I pressed 'z' seeking to reach the end. I quit as it kept going and going. Where it stopped I checked the Word count with a checker arriving at 9,915 characters. That equates to 1,652 words using 6 characters per word. That is enough for an article. So, who knows how many words are possible?

One thing to bear in mind the forums are indexed on Google. I doubt many would find it unless the search term/phrase is correct. I don't know if in the distant past whether or not views for forum topics counted for Adsense for HP themselves.

I searched the topic title; Discussion Boards on this site, and, yes, it is indexed. The link next is to the Google landing page for it listed as #1 article.

However, like Wilderness I at times pass by lengthy posts/replies at least waiting until another time. Also, I confess I have on occasion been somewhat wordy. Oops!

I disagree, no one is compelled to read a comment whether it is a single sentence or a dissertation.

I have no fear of the free and open exchange of ideas regardless as to their length or brevity.

I would agree with you but...

Like wilderness said, I simply dont read it. The problem is when people respond to the post, it keep posting the same mamotreto over and over again. The scrolling gets annoying. (I agree with GA too.)

We need the edit option we used to have when responding to a particular post.

IB, I know that you agree, your comments and style have always supported that idea. Our problem is with technical issues of scrolling through the  reposting of long comments when one replies to them.

I understand your perspective. Nevertheless, there are a few of us, a minority perhaps, who derive genuine satisfaction from delving deeper into significant issues or subjects. While it's true that some opt for brief comments, in a political chat like this, it can be challenging for me to reduce complex matters to mere one-liners.

I sincerely hope the moderator won't impose strict word limits. Restricting free speech in a chat forum seems contrary to its purpose. It also raises an intriguing question: has our society become content with quick one-liners?

Moreover, I'm curious about why some individuals find extended discussions unsettling. I'm one who genuinely enjoys leaving detailed comments, and I intend to continue unless the moderator advises otherwise.

If you wish to propose word limits, it might be more appropriate to discuss it directly with the moderator rather than initiating a thread in a political forum. Your topic seems aimed at restricting users' free speech on the HP Political forum, which aligns with the political landscape but may not serve the forum's core purpose.

I think the length of a comment should be determined only by the commenters need to use as many words as they need to in order to share their thought or idea completely.

I agree with the responder above that one can choose to read a comment or not, but there should be no limit on how long any comment is.

When I get long...it is due to someone ticking me off! wink
But, my take, if I want to read chapters, I'll pick up a book. A lot of times I will just scan the longer comments to get the gist. If I am moved to do so, I'll go back and do a more thorough read.
