Trump gets $15m in ABC News defamation case

ABC News has agreed to pay $15m (£12m) to US President-elect Donald Trump to settle a defamation lawsuit after its star anchor falsely said he had been found "liable for rape".

George Stephanopoulos made the statements repeatedly during an interview on 10 March this year while challenging a congresswoman about her support for Trump.

A jury in a civil case last year determined Trump was liable for "sexual abuse", which has a specific definition under New York law.

As part of Saturday's settlement, first reported by Fox News Digital, ABC also published an editor's note expressing its "regret" for the statements by Stephanopoulos.

According to the settlement, ABC News will pay $15m as a charitable contribution to a "Presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for Plaintiff, as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past".

The $15m will go towards Trump's future presidential library, US media reported.

The network also agreed to pay $1m towards Trump's legal fees.

Under the settlement, the network will post an editor's note to the bottom of its 10 March 2024 online news article about the story.

It will say: "ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC's This Week on March 10, 2024."

An ABC News spokesperson said in a statement the company was "pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing".

First, thank you for posting a current issue... Refreshing.

I wonder if he’ll file more suits, considering how many in the left-leaning media have called him a rapist and used other slanderous and defamatory labels against him. I’m pleased to see George has been made an example of, and I’d like to see more people take responsibility for their lies. It is time to out the lies.

I think many of the other media outlets are now thinking twice before bringing up the "rape" allegation.

It is time they start treating this man fairly.  He has taken all of their arrows and still connected to the American people better than any democrat.

Maybe, the main stream media could start committing actual acts of journalism instead of always repeating democrat talking points.

Yeah, you think that folks would have learned from the massive Fox payout

Yes, I believe many in the media will think twice before being overly dramatic with their labels. I was just watching Trump’s press conference, and when asked about the possibility of more defamation lawsuits, he made it clear that there would be. The media need to understand that they aren’t shock jocks; they should focus on reporting the news without adding their biases. It also seems like CNN and MSNBC are nearing the end of their reign. I saw this coming— the lack of professionalism in those shows was appalling. In the end, truth prevails.

Most Americans aren’t buying into the propaganda. I have faith in the American people. Ultimately, they step up and make it clear that enough is enough, or at least the majority do. And the majority have tuned into a couple of outlets that we feel we can trust to report all the news. Yes, they are conservative and do share conservative views, but one finds a more balanced platform.

So much for claims here (and elsewhere) that "sexual abuse" is the same as "rape" in New York.  I must have seen that claim 50 times...but the court says no it is not, to the tune of $15,000,000.

Following a recent $15 million defamation settlement with ABC News
President-elect Donald Trump has initiated additional legal actions against other media entities and individuals.

The Des Moines Register and Pollster Ann Selzer: Trump has filed a lawsuit alleging consumer fraud over a poll that inaccurately predicted his loss in Iowa, a state he won by over 13 points

CBS: A $10 billion lawsuit has been filed against CBS, accusing the network of false or misleading reporting.

In addition to the previously mentioned lawsuits against ABC News, CBS, and The Des Moines Register, President-elect Donald Trump has indicated plans to pursue further legal action against media outlets and individuals he believes have defamed him.  He has stated any money from these lawsuits will go to build a library.

I feel he needs to make samples to stop journalists from feeling they can defame a person just due to they feel they can get away with it.

No only is President Donald Trump cleaning out the DC swamp, he's also cleaning out the yellow journalism in the country.

He is doing a lot of good and he hasn't even taken office yet.

Lol, a lawsuit because a pollster got it wrong?  I guess Biden should go back and sue those who overestimated Trump in their polls?  Rasmussen comes to mind.  This lawsuit is ridiculous , pure vengeance and isn't going to be taken seriously by a judge.
