Why Latino people are deemed threatening to America? Is because of their racial/ethnic ambiguity? Why are some Americans fearful of Latinos? Your thoughts.
That’s a really important question to reflect on. The idea that Latino people are seen as “threatening” to America is troubling, and it often feels rooted more in perception than reality. I think part of this fear comes from unfamiliarity or misunderstanding, sometimes people fear what they don’t know or can’t easily categorize. The racial and ethnic ambiguity you mention might play a role, as Latinos come from diverse backgrounds and don’t fit into the traditional racial boxes some Americans are used to thinking about.
I want to add, I live in Mexico during the winter months, and I’ve gotten to feel the people there, their values and traditions, are much aligned with Americans in many ways. But you brought up a great point.
I also wonder if the fear has deeper roots, like economic anxiety, concerns about cultural change, or political rhetoric that portrays Latinos as a monolithic group that challenges existing social structures. Sometimes, these fears are amplified by media or political figures who use them to stoke division.
What do you think? Is this fear mainly about ethnicity, or are there other social and economic factors at play that contribute to this perception? It’s worth unpacking because understanding the root causes is key to addressing the issue thoughtfully
Outside of racial extremists, I don't see much of the sentiment that anyone fears Latinos as a threat to America as a racial collective. More so they fear the ulterior motives and agendas of those encouraging and facilitating illegal, undocumented immigration.
However, to answer the question as to why an American may fear Latinos as a whole, go live adjacent to the border in a city like Ciudad Juarez, or in the ghettos of LA like Compton, South Central, outskirts of DTLA. These places are where you get to experience the extremes of racial tension in the USA, the same places the mainstream media loves to feed off of.
All of my Latino friends are hardcore conservative, and have a more avid and coherent sense of American culture than even myself. I also love the culture they bring with them from Mexico, and when we go down there to immerse in their culture it is always a good time (even if we sometimes end up in jail for a few days LOL).
My thoughts... I think the opposite, I think Latinos are the salvation of America...
Most come here with more American values instilled in them than many Americans themselves have... family, good work ethic, decency...
It is when you have an Administration like Biden's, that encourages the likes of Venezuela to empty out their jails and send all their criminals to America... or when they refuse to keep the border secure and stop the rampant cartel activities, that we have a problem...
Though, yes I also have a problem with putting them up in five star hotels so they can make the owners of those hotels rich, at taxpayer expense, or are giving them 10K credit cards and a plane ticket to wherever they want to go... what foreigner wouldn't want to come to America for an all expenses paid vacation at the American taxpayer's dime?
Its not letting in migrants that's the problem, if it is done in an orderly controlled manner... it is having sanctuary cities that harbor rapists, murderers, professional criminals that IS a problem I have.
Just like so many other issues I have with 'the Left'... like Men in women's sports, or child sex changes and 72 sexes... in other words the insanity that will surely end our society if we allow it to continue.
"Most come here with more American values instilled in them than many Americans themselves have... family, good work ethic, decency..."
I can agree with this. As I said, I have spent many decades now living in Mexico, and one of the biggest reasons we love to do so is the people. They hold my values in a nutshell. All you said and more.

The article came from an opinion piece in the New York Times, I would have liked to provide a simpler link. But, it was not possible. I think that this article below written by Mr. Janelle Bouie is both spot on and timeless, and explains my attitude in regard to this issue and countless others. The...
