What does, "if you love something set it free" really mean to you?

I have heard this saying my whole life and never really understood what it meant. So what do you think it means?

It means that if you truly love someone/something, don't cage it and hold it close and never let anyone else ever get near it. Don't be jealous or possessive of the affections of the person you love. Each person has to be their own individual self and that isn't possible to do if the person who claims to love them holds them so jealously close that they can't have their own experiences or friends anymore.
The second part of the quote is about a balance. If the love is mutual, two people will stay by each other without either one having to constantly hold the other one there. If the love isn't mutual, the two will fall away from each other. If it is mutual, they will always return to each other.

I think it refers to the questioning of love.  If you "set it free" ~ means that if one is questioning whether the love is true or not that it is best to give them the space needed to decide.  If the person you love realizes that they need your love as much as you need theirs than the love remains and it was always yours.
If they don't return, the love was not true love and not meant to be.
It takes strength to let someone you love go and never know whether you'll see them again.  It takes faith to believe that true love always finds a way.

Allow the person to move on without you I guess it's better to let them go and deal with getting over them other than holding on to someone that does not want to be in the relationship. When u love someone you want the best for them even if its not You....a hard pill to swallow but true

If you love something set it free? To me this statement means that if I love something no matter what it is, I must let it go of it so that I may see what I Love from a distance, so to speak. Once I can see what I love in the distance, this allows me to understand what I love and why I love it. Giving me the gift of perspective and truth. For when I let go of it, I am not holding onto it, then I may be able to see what I love for what it is. In a way it's like the first time your parents let go of the bike and you started riding on your own, they knew this day would come and it might have been painful, but then, once they let go, they can now see you in the distance, the child they created that has now grown up and can walk, talk and live their life and it is beautiful!! Good Question!! Thanks for reading!!
