If you want your next family event to be sporting, but don't want to fight about politics or religion because they've been overdone and are now boring - what other topics might start a spirited debate? Why have a polite gathering when you can have a free for all? What topics would you bring up - remember NOT religious or political issues, something else to mix things up.

Yes definitely :) Good for the HP family debates for sure.
Are you from Montana?
lol poetic - in these parts we are close to military bases, so it's usually UFO conspiracies more than bigfoot. He doesn't have many places to hide here.. :)
ChristinS - I think PoeticFailosophy is very serious about Sasquatch - I think BigFoot is a demeaning term and not politically correct - please be more sensitive next time!
I'm sure he is, after all he has tried to tie him into every major religion lol. He himself used the term "bigfoot" however, so I can't see being offended by a word one uses oneself ;)
Sadly the mods have deleted my other questions about Sasquatch and Islam, same-sex love, and being from Montana. My Sasquatch GF uses the term Bigfoot, so I think it's OK for some if you use that term. Have a lovely weekend Christin and brblog!
That's too bad poetic. I thought they were funny.
NOTHING brings on a more visceral response than religion and politics. However, there are some TOUCH topics outside of the purview of religion and politics.
books can be another good one. They don't have to be heated discussions but they can bring up a good conversation
All great ideas, of course they'll come back to politics most likely, but I think everything does anymore!
Oh yeah, these are all great starters of debates for sure! :)
Of course the question is tongue and cheek ;), but I do wonder what book I might stir up a controversy over, perhaps how much I think 50 shades sucks... or Harry Potter was ridiculous - that should rile some people up! :)
Music & Books are subject to the audience and orators/music lovers present during the discussion.
Try some classics or self help topics - they usually work, even latest scientific discoveries are engaging
my personal fav is "Who moved my cheese
ah yes, good call - be a non-expert expert, that could make dinner interesting in no time ;) good answer.

I don't even have a smart phone yet - I wouldn't be very good in that debate lol. Hadn't heard about the school monitor issue - that's a good thought.
It sounds like you come from a family of fairly reasonable people then - it must be nice :) some of our family members would argue about anything.
Yes me too, hence the question was asked in humor :) we have a lot of family members who can debate anything - and I do mean anything!
I had a GF who would argue everything no matter what, but what she was really after was make up sex.
I've heard that's the best kind Borsia - although my hubs and I don't fight so I really don't know. Perhaps I'll start an argument with him later and find out hehe.
