What is the hesistancy and general vagueness among adults, esp. in the United States, surrounding
the use of the word lover when they are in romantic relationships, preferring to use the word boyfriend or girlfriend instead ?
Why is there is so much hesistancy in using the word "lover". The terms boyfriend/girlfriend seems very sophomoric. We are mature and sensual adults in relationships, not teenagers experiencing puppy love.
I believe most people look at the word "lover" as either being something illicit like a "cheating affair" or something along the lines of a "booty call".
The words boyfriend and girlfriend however childish the title may seem for adults to call one another still has the connotation of a "serious relationship" for many people.
When people hear the word "lovers" they mainly think in terms of (sex) today. The romantic definition of the word is lost much like the word "gay" use to mean happy. Words and their definitions have a way of changing overtime.
Healthy & mature adults have relationships they LOVE.Lover seems to be the most apt term.Sex is a part of relationships. It's beautiful & natural. When one is involved, he/she has a lover Nothing's wrong with that. Boy/girlfriend, that's high
I don't think there is anything wrong with calling one's significant other whatever they feel comfortable calling one another. I was simply explaining (my theory) as to why many people still use the terms boyfriend/girlfriend. It's not a big deal.
I know Mr. Dashing, I ALWAYS love your answers and input.
What do you call your boyfriend/lover when you speak about him?
I am married, so luckily I do not have to answer for myself, although I would probably use girlfriend instead of lover. I would probably feel silly saying "my lover" because I would feel like some second rate romance novel hero wannabe. I guess what I am saying is that if girlfriend/boyfriend is one extreme, the polar opposite extreme would be calling them lover. How about "partner"? That seems like a happy medium. At least grown ups don't say that they are "going together" like in junior high! lol
True, partner is another apt word to describe intimate gatherings. I just find boyfriend and girlfriend too high school. Really now!

Should a man be allowed to be in more than one relationship? For example, dating a woman who he intends to marry but sleeping with a man.
