It needs more than 3 things, but start with communication, sense of humour & obviously love.

Assuming you're talking about a romantic relationship, that is. If you're talking about a relationship with your dentist, then teeth, money and toothpaste.

If you're talking about your bank manager, etc, etc

    1. Communication.
    2. Communication.
    3. Communication.

Without communication you won't be able to attain the other things a relationship needs. It all starts with talking to each other frankly, truthfully and exactly how you feel. The rest just comes and goes, both good and bad, but you can get through it all with communication.

I'm right there with you chuckG.  The only thing I would change would be replacing the communication #2 with laughter, but that's just what has worked for me in the past.

Intimacy, communication, and committment. By being intimate, you are comfortable around the other person. Communication creates fewer fights, better choices, realizations, and a stronger relationship. Committment helps make a stronger bond, makes longer relationships, and adds to security.
Love is not needed in starting in a relationship. As the relationship continues, the couple will learn to respect each other and learn to love over a number of years. Arranged marriages have this happen all the time.

I agree with everyone...communication, honesty, trust, friendship, laughter, commitment, love, forgiveness.....they all matter.
