A heart is broken when desires and/or expectations of another person (or situation) are not fulfilled.

I think that is the essence of it. Sad disappointment is what I think we call a "broken heart" - the hopes of something amazing being crushed under the final, overbearing weight of reality.

a broken heart is caused not by lack of something. the heart can always be mended from disappointment, distrust or dishonesty.

It is personal extinction that causes heart break. the idea that part of one's self has died as a result of a lost relationship or mistruth.

the heart is not broken, but rather, the heart tends to break itself.

love is not there anymore -- you outgrow each other, boredom, cheating...LOTS of REASONS..

if love is lost ----- everything follows ---respect, trust, communication prob, loyalty is gone

    then broken heart

ultimately a heart is broken when it suffers a loss, that has not been of their choosing, and can do nothing about the situation.  Having no choice in a matter is always difficult, but in matters of the heart it is near impossible to handle
