As Role Models go, who would you say makes a good Lesbian Role Model? Ellen De Generes? Tina Tequila? Any names come to mind out there? What are your opinions? Or is the world a bit short on Role Models who are Lesbian? Or do you think Straight Roles Models make a good substitute? Let me know, please.
I liked Ellen D. until I found out she was gay. Then when I got to know her better, I liked her again. I found she is a genuine and loving person. Nuf said.
There are people like Rosie O'Donnell who speak their mind and have been successful Actresses and activists. You have Melissa Ethridge who creates amazing music and lots of other Lesbian role models that are excellent people for kids to want to be like.
Gosh, my personal philosophy is to forgive people their limitations, and even I cannot get behind Rosie O'Donnell and lesbian hasn't a thing to do with it.
I love Ellen. I think she is genuine and a riot!
Since I am a writer, I must mention one. Fannie Flagg overcame dyslexia to become a fantastic writer. She wrote:
[i]Welcome to the World, Baby Girl[i] and [i]Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe[i].
...i don't know...i can't seriously look at a celebrity as a role model...role models are people who you are actually around and who you know or are familiar with...not what television or any media form promotes...that's marketing as far as i'm concerned....can't see it any other way.
How about looking at the women around that do some really good community work, people who teach, women that are in various forms of positions of influence...there are lots of them...you just have to open your eyes to it...speak to people you know...pay attention to your local news and you'll hear the voices of some of those women advocating or offering their opinions etc. based on their experiences in life, their work and their accomplishments....those are the true role models from my perspective.
my 2 cents.
Void question. You can not have a positive out of a wrong causation. Lesbianism is a sin, how can we have a role model out of a sin? Try to find a better choice of words.
...awwwww....saturday night on the net.....i think her choice of words were just fine....sorry to break the news to you, it's not a sin either....
Wow, folks, thanks for the great response. And I am so smiling at this pigeon now. Hahaha. I guess there are some role models out there after all. And closer to home in my case too. But Ellen De Generes seems to get the majority vote I think.
Of recent celebrities, I like Rachel Maddow and the Indigo Girls a lot. Jane Addams and Eleanor Roosevelt also supposedly preferred the ladies, and even people who disagree with their politics would be hard pressed to argue that they were not remarkable women!
Some more Lesbian role models:
Top Twins,K.D.Lang- musicians;
Gertrude Stein, Jane Rule,Ivan Coyote,Karen X.Tulchinsky, Ann Marie McDonald, Camilla Gibb - writers;
Johanna Sigurdardottir - Prime Minister of Iceland;
Martina Navratilova-tennis star, Betty Baxter-Canadian Olympian.

Who are your strong female role models?One of the reason Hillary Clinton was popular with her supporters was because she was a strong woman who enabled women. We need more of that. Who else do you look up to as a strong woman in her field?

Where are they? Is it healthy for our kids to be watching Serena threaten a line judge? Tiger Woods throwing his clubs around when he doesn't sink a puttt? Joe Wilson calling our president a liar? Kanya West embarrassing himself and everyone else? Chris Brown smacking his girlfriend around?...
