   Of course, if you live in a society where those with power can simply take what you work for then hopefully you're lucky enough to be one of those in power. Ultimately, though it was not luck that brought about our prosperity.

   For me, it's the HARD WORK.
   What if LUCK didn't come unto you? What will you do? Wait and wait and wait?
   But when you do the HARD WORK, everything you want to have will be possible because you're doing all the best you got to have your luck.

   Hard work, if you must choose between the two. How hard you work is often the only thing you have control over. Luck comes and goes. Working hard brings more of it, and makes you better prepared to receive it.
   
   Smart work might trump them both!

   There is no such thing at luck, your consistancy and mindset is mightier than them all!  btw What you hear people "say" and what happens don't share the same beliefs, neither do they go hand in hand!

    I would take great good luck over hard work any day. Reason: hard work does not guarantee success, but if you are lucky, success falls into your lap with virtually no effort on your part.

    hard work; the satisfaction that comes with the success achieved as a result of effort cannot be replaced by the whim of luck.

    I would definitely say hard work. Working smart is even better, but for the purposes of the question, hard work is mightier. People tend to absolve themselves of responsibility for their position in life when they rely on luck.

    It really depends on the situation. I think of sports in that aspect. If the better runner falls in a race, then luck works out better. For the long run, I'd have to say that hard work is mightier.

    Start working towards your goal and what you perceive as luck may find you along the way.  Some may get the luck part sooner into their journey than others. 
    
    At least with hard work (or working smart) you're in control of your destiny.  You're the one who's responsible.  If you believe you need luck to be successful, then you've just given away your power to some unknown entity and can fall prey to the victim/blame mentality.
    
    I think what trips us up is when we hear about some actor, for example, who was discovered in a bank or restaurant or a musician discovered on youtube - and that was their big break. The only thing is - we don't hear about all the low paying jobs, hours of practice and study, auditions and bit parts/gigs they went on before the big break. 
    
    Even if luck does find you early, you still need to work to make the dream or goal come true.
