Is it ok for chrisitians to assert their opinion on what they believe but slander anyone else?

I see everywhere how theists are preaching on street corners and publicaly bashing anyone who doesn't believe the same way they do. And they think that is ok, but what about someone who is of a different belief?

No I do not believe its OK. In fact I once had a issue with a church who even through it was illegal to have anything religious inside of school property would pass out bibles right outside of the gate. So one day I was fed up and asked him how can he hand out Bibles in state property and he responds it is God's will and if he can save just one person he could care less.

So I kindly told him that if he didn't stop I would call police. He called me a satantic child and told me I was going to hell. I told him good than I can take my rightful place on the throne.

Anyways this went on for a while intul my principle came out and he ran away and never came back.

I don't think it's ok. Who gives the theists the right to say whatever they want and if anyone else tries to recipricate, then that is uncalled for.  It's hypocritical to say the least.

Melissa.. why would you call the police when this man only had love in his heart for you? But it is okay for you to spout your atheism all about as freely as you want? Little missy this Country was founded on the principles of religion and Jesus Chri

We should follow Jesus's example. The Samaritans were treated poorly by the Jews because they were the non Christians of their day.

Jesus talked to Samaritans like they were people, like how he treated the woman at the well, who was a Samaritan. He even told the story of the good Samaritan, which gave them a good stereotype.

We still need to preach the Gospel, as Jesus did., but remember that he commanded us to love everyone. Bashing someone's religion isn't love.

Well, yeah I suppose they are fallowing his example. But, when does the human rights kick in? Is everyone just going to run around and destory the opinions of anyone else who doesn't agree with them? unless that is what they mean by "being like jesus

Didn't Jesus call the Samaritan woman a dog, in essence?  Matthew 15:22-28

Snøwmanposted 9 years agoin reply to this

In modern times calling someone a dog  is quite offensive. Back then that wasn't the case. The woman didn't seem offended at all. What Jesus meant was "Just be patient. It's not your turn yet". He just used the analogy that people eat before the dogs

Believe me... Christians are slandered way more than atheists. And with more anger and curse words. Think about this again before you speak.

As a atheist in a very religious town I can tell you its hard. Its almost like a shameful secret to be a atheist. Religious people are more free to express their lifestyle choice than atheist. In fact atheism can be a crime in a lot of countries.

There will always be those who want to dislike others who are unlike themselves. There will always be a tendency of certain elements to elevate themselves by looking down their nose at others or pretending to be victimized etc. It isn't right for any group to slander others, but it is human nature.  The best bet is to ignore these people and focus on being secure in who you are.  I say let everyone believe what they want, so long as they don't try to infringe upon my rights with their beliefs.  Most Christians do not engage in that type of behavior - not the ones I have associated with.

Most people are reasonable.  So long as the reasonable outnumber the pushy, we can all live peacefully together.

First off, is it really slander? "Slander" is defined as 1) defamation; calumny: rumors full of slander. 2) a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report: a slander against his good name. 3) defamation by oral utterance rather than by writing, pictures, etc. If they are indeed slandering you, take them to court because it can be solved by legal means. The reason I mention this is because in simple words, no one may slander anyone else without the fear of legal repercussions.

So do you really mean "slander" or do you mean these people are rude and obnoxious? To state the question the way you did is stirring up more trouble by accusing people of doing something illegal - something I doubt they are.

That said, even the rude and obnoxious things they say, although legal in all 50 states and a lot of other countries, shouldn't be uttered. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but we need to learn to state them in ways that don't "turn off" the other people. As a Christian I should be able to state my opinion (in a nice way) without being attacked by non-Christians and non-Christians should be able to state their opinions without being attacked. "Attacked" involves insults, namecalling, etc. Having a calm discussion about our different views (while being nice to each other) is the way things should be done.

In the end, my opinion is Christians shouldn't be nasty to anyone for any reason - whether that person is non-Christian or belongs to a different Christian denomination. Now I have to ask this ... why don't we all try to be nice to each other? Not all atheists say nasty things to Christians and not all Christians say nasty things to atheists. If some of can do it, hopefully other people will learn from the example we set.

You believe me that Christians also attack other Christians for their beliefs not followed in the exact manner.  It isn't always CVA or AVC.  Many times it is CVC

That would be nice wouldn't it. christians are just as rude as non-christians if not more. At least the ones I am surrounded with, think they can say whatever they want. But it's only wrong when someone does the same thing with a different opinion.

There are a great many of us who, for whatever reason of insecurity, whether religious, political or social, will demean another simply to make themselves look good or feel better about themselves. This is inherent, I think, especially within religious and political circles. It is a matter of establishing dominance or superiority over another. We also see this with regards to comedy today where laughs are gained through the demeaning or degrading of others.
Perhaps, it is a matter of aligning oneself with the biggest bully on the block so that he will not attack you.
As an Atheist for the great majority of my life, 70+ years, it is something that you expect and most of the time you tend to feel some sympathy for the theist.
Freedom of speech however is most important to a free society. That we should call  for the government to define free speech, as we are doing, is essentially asking two wolves and a  lamb to vote on what is for lunch.
That you are voicing your thoughts here, as am I, could be construed by some as inflammatory and divisive or insulting and therefore the government should step in. Very dangerous stuff.
Freedom of speech is freedom of speech and not to be defined by you, me or the government, I find it no more insulting that a theist condemns me to his hell than a politician who speaks to divide this country with demeaning remarks.
We must be careful what we demand of others not to say, as it may come back to us.

American Indians... YES YOU ARE RIGHT!!!! But, those who came to this country came to escape the tyranny of a ruler who could tell them who, what, and when to worship. They fled for the freedom of religion. You have brought up a very important fact!!

They came to escape tyranny by causing more and that was acceptable? How about we focus on freedom "from" religion for everyone. You are free in this country to believe and worship as you wish, we are free also not to. win/win for all.
